Gag Me With a Lip Gloss…

When any of us early Gen X’ers hear anything about the 80’s, our minds go right back to all the great memories of that time period. Gummy bracelets, lace hair bows, melting our eye liner with a lighter, shiny Lip Smackers, etc. Although we can gently bury a good portion of the fads back then, some will show up in your makeup drawer again this spring/summer season. Every Rose Has Its Thorn

Bright blush was a definite siren for an MTV GenX’ers. The blush would go from the middle of the cheek and sweep up HARD, right into the hairline by the temple. This season the shades are again bold and noticeable too. The best way to get this manipulatable color is to find a buildable balm, a cream blush or a blush stick. Blue Eyes

Elton John might have sung about lonely blue eyes that filled with tears, but when it comes to blue eye makeup, it’s back with some power! The 80’s embraced rich, velvet baby blue shadows swiped across our lid in more of a pop art esthetic. Don’t shy away from bold & bright blendable blues as liners and cut crease colors. Bold lips never really go out of style completely. Even bold browns and tans can turn heads  with a softer look. This year’s lip fads go far beyond a simple matte. Not only are high gloss and shimmers out for our enjoyment but they are at a new level. Matte lips are still nice, but there is nothing wrong with a good high shine gloss as a topper. And the hot color for warmer temps?  FUSCIA!!!  For extra fun, find a gloss with a glitter and iredecent shimmer. Colored glosses need to be reapplied more often but some of the colors are to drool for. Don’t pass them by. Remember Madonna’s deep red lip look? Yeah. That. Eye of the Tiger

Your eyes may not look like a wild cat’s but your brows can fluff out nicely for the fuller brow look this year. Brooke Shields was our eyebrow idol during the 80’s with the with face-framing brows to die for. (Where did THAT go awry?) Murphy’s Law says if you tweeze them into the latest in look, they will be thicker the next year. If you are going to let yours get a little thicker for this season, find a good growth serum made for brows and lashes. Invest in a good lash primer to thicken what you have, follow with a brow mascara, fill in any spaces then sweep a cotton swab with witch hazel to clean up the edges and shape to your liking. Even though colors and makeup looks this year are bold, bright and colorful, it’s important not to wear everything AT ONCE, looking like you are ready to audition for “Dallas”. Right? Beuller? You get the gist of what to look out for this spring/summer. Start slow, find your comfort level and then have fun. And if someone mistakes you for Tiffany, just smile and sign their sneakers. I had been getting an Ipsy subscription bag for geesh… 8+ yrs? After all this time, I have found items I have fallen in love with. I even found some that have intentionally fallen in the garbage. This month I decided to try some of these great samples and see how my skin, hair and nails look and feel. Now I know why so many companies choose to sample a new product during the perfect time of year. Purchase point, price, need, want and money timing all play a part. Let’s see what items got my attention in September:

Skin Care: Ultra Tonic Watermelon Extract Facial Toner

I used to use a facial toner each time I washed my face. I like knowing that no traces of makeup are left and my skin has a correct Ph level. Cleansers are a must but I like that extra bit of “ahhhh” that the toner gives me. This toner has a nice light watermelon scent but what’s even better is that it doesn’t burn my skin, causes no irritation and gives my skin an overall softer feel. Make Up — L.A. Colors Browie Wowie Brow Pomade

There was a time when you didn’t leave the house without doing your brows which usually took 30 min +/- . Now? I’ve managed to get them to a decent shape by precise tweezing and becoming a skilled brow ninja with sharp-tip tweezers and a mirror. After seeing this L.A. brow pot with a nice brush, I felt I had to give it a try. It was a bit more challenging at first but the look was natural, the color was spot on and it got much easier over time. Tip: Do a quick #2 pencil line to follow then create your look by painting with the liner brush and a spoolie. This was such a great price, I bought a backup a week later. L.A. Hair and Nails — NYK1 Super Strong Nail Glue for Tips, Acrylic and Press On Nails

After almost 30 years of biting my nails, I quit cold turkey on 12/5/1997. I remember the date because it was a huge accomplishment for me. I wanted long, hooker red nails without sitting for an hour, filing, pushing and soaking only to have them tear off and get weak in about 10 days. I love the designs of fake nails but I usually lose about 7 out of 10 in the first three hour. Then a friend said I had to try this glue. Better than Gorilla Glue. Best selling nail glue on Amazon. I felt this was definitely challenge worthy and I went for it. I read the instructions which is very important. Get your tools, grab your fitted nails, use the glue as directed and go! They stick and they stay. My pointer finger will usually come off first, but that’s because I use it as a.tool. This way of doing my nails is not damaging them and I’m pleased on how easy and long wearing they are. My nails are very long and growing stronger. I now happily choose prepainted nails so they don’t chip and even if I lose one, I will sand down the glue and the inside of the nail and reapply. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! Fashion — Sidefeel Women’s Flare Bell Bottom Jeans with High Waist

They are back and I couldn’t be happier. I’m not a skater girl, but my sister was a child of the 60’s so I lean towards the hippie lifestyle. Well, for 10 days a year at least. I had ordered a pair of jeans earlier last month that fit terrible. I wanted a pair of jeans that made my ass look phenomenal without having to pour myself into them. Well, I found them. With frayed bell-bottom hems. They actually come in other styles and colors butI was drawn to these immediately. Don’t miss this comeback trend this season. It may seem ridiculous to get a power strip with this many outlets but let me tell you— it’s not. My hairdryer uses one and covers one up because the plug is so big. In fact 4 of my outlets do that. August Must Haves….

Summer is winding down. Since I spent my spring AND summer dealing with various surgeries, broken bones, extensive appointments and procedures, I’m looking forward—or should I say hoping—that fall will bring easier travels and good health. That hasn’t stopped me from testing out some good products, either from store samples, good finds or glamour subscriptions. I do pay for each item I list and if I do get the product I will test for free from the company, I will let you know.

So what stirred my curiosity this month, with a positive result—positive it will be in my beauty routine from now on? Let’s see see what I have found:

Skin Care:

ColourPop’s Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Hydrating Foundation in 10N: I think any one who wears foundation has been through the torment of finding the best formula AND the right shade. I had bought a ColourPop foundation a year ago but my skin wasn’t as fair now as it was then. So, during a great Ulta sale, I was able to get a darker shade for only pennies. This formula is fabulous for all kinds of skin. The medium coverage is perfect for covering up imperfections without a cakey feel. Your skin stays hydrated while giving you a smooth finish all day. I apply it with a wet sponge then setting it/baking it with translucent powder. Available in over 40 different shades. Ulta, $16

Makeup:

Maybelline’s New York TattooStudio Long-Lasting Sharpenable Eyeliner Pencil with 36 Hour Wear in Deep Onyx: I doubt I’m the only one who actually uses between 1-3 different eye liners on their eyes nowadays. I need a waterproof waterline pencil that LASTS; a tight, thin liquid liner for the top lids; a pot gel liner for smudging and smokey looks; and any color liners for layering and creasing. I’ve used my share of waterline pencils over my lifetime and I can finally say I have one that can survive my typical days. Tattoo Studio pencil is the bomb. I always get the pencils that need sharpening because I want that line controlled! Plus? It just stays put and doesn’t run or smudge, looking fabulous for hours & hours. No other eye liner pencil will knock this off my #1. Amazon, $6.30

Hair & Nails:

Cake’s The Curl Friend: I don’t know if it’s a mid-life thing but out of the blue, my hair got wavy. It’s had a little bit in past years but now I can actually put product on my hair and scrunch to get textured waves. I am loving it. I can spritz some water on my hair or towel dry it, then rub a quarter sized drop of The Curl Friend into your hands and comb your fingers through your hair, scrunching as you go. Not only will your curls be defined, but this cream also calms frizz and keeps your hair shiny. I’m loving the wavy volume I get when doing a light blowout. Rite Aid, $9.69

Fashion:

Acid Wash Denims: Yeah, I said it. It was great to hear that acid wash jeans are back in style this fall and I couldn’t be happier. Not only does it remind me of my 21 and over clubbing days, but the outfits you can create win today’s different style fashion pieces, and accessories can really put a new spin on this unique style of denim. Of course, you may want to add one or two different types of jeans, but mix up your styles. A pair of acid wash cargo pants puts two styles that are stylin’ this season together. you really can’t forget some other fun pieces, such as vests, jackets, and even fall flats from the shoe department. Pre-owned Designer Handbags: I will admit that I am a sucker for a Betsey Johnson, Coach or Juicy Couture purse. I’m always looking for the fun but the traditional on all those are classic. A while back, a handle on one of my juicy bags let loose. I wasn’t too pleased that the repair would ruin its aesthetic too. A friend told me if I liked that one style so much, I should look for it on Poshmark. Well, I’ll be dammed, I found it. It can in all its glory and I was proud to give it a new home. Before you step out with all that cash, hit up your local consignment shops and thrift stores. I’ve found some great names in my local stores. Know your knock offs first then go browsing. Won’t hurt to have apps or bookmarks open when you go purse shopping! Poshmark Juicy purse, prices vary.

With fall quickly approaching, this is the time we want to look for those end of summer sales. Keep an eye out for sales on tops, tanks, jeans, shoes, handbags, boots, and oddities (lip gloss, hair pins, wallets, pj’s, etc.) to jazz up and create this season’s new fashion trend. July Must Haves…

Second month! Woot woot! Now don’t give me slack—I’m running to drs and occupational therapy for my bilateral broke wrists plus other drs visits. In addition to all this plus preparing for Eric and I’s yearly trip to our art camping festival, things have fallen a tad behind. Plus I’m a bit concerned on how much I can take while healing. I’m hesitant to put myself way out there while I continue to mend I must say. I am tired of watching time pass me by out my living room window for another season. So we will see how this goes.

Skin Care:

Realher I Am Convinced Setting Powder— I am the first to admit that the “must have” item in a drag workroom that I too call a must is loose, translucent powder. Depending on the occasion, you either lightly dust to set or you sit with waiting to “bake” it on. No oven needed. Your body temp will soften your foundation, fill fine lines then set it with a loose layer of powder. I found quickly that carrying a tub of loose powder in your purse a horribly messy situation. This great pressed powder is lightweight and gives your skin a nice matte finish without any clumping or smudging on the skin. The shade is perfect and I couldn’t be happier. Hair & Nails:

Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat – It was a while back when I read a Top 5 Reader’s Favorite Top Coat list in a fashion magazine. I was able to find Seche Vite’s very easily in my local CVS. It did not fail. Everything that the users raved about was fact. It dried fast, was super shiny, chip proof and was smooth to work with. My only complaint? Because of its quick dry formula, it begins to thicken and clump in the bottle within a few months. Now, I just buy one at the beginning of each summer since that’s when my mani’s and pedi’s are most important. This by far is my go-to brand. Nothing has come close and it’s the only top coat you will find in this house!! (Click picture to link to product)

Fashion:

White Tanks – I couldn’t be happier to see this trend on this season’s list. I love tank tops not just because they are cool in the summer but because you can wear them as a layer with jackets or sweaters. This season, you’ll find cute tanks with flower trim, rhinestone necklines, and carefully placed splotches of color. And to rock a bold bright white color brings a touch of class to the look even a bit more. And please… we all know a white tank with a denim bottom and/or leather jacket just looks FAB! Period. Remember to wear a NUDE regular or strapless bra.) Shein, $6.49

Accessories:

Juicy Couture Puffer Tote – I need another purse like I need a hole in the head. But when my wrists took a turn from whole to pieces, I needed something I could sling quickly over my shoulder. Without difficulty. This not only has the bling, the name and the size I wanted,but the price was a bonus. Holds folded papers and can easily hold a large wallet, a cosmetic bag, and about five other small/medium storage zip bags. This will be around for a while! (Click picture for availability links.)

Very often I try to do a favorites list, especially if it is for a new month or season. I’ve decided to really be diligent in consistently listing my five current faves each month. Each fave will fall in a different category so I don’t overload with eye makeup or serums. I like a product for sensitive skin, a mineral SPF, broad spectrum protection, and highly favored amongst the industry experts…you! This tube is everything this redhead needs to keep her fair skin guarded from the harmful rays. It might not be thought of as skin care but the fact is—it is. Big time. Makeup:  

L.A. Colors Holographic Iridescent Lipgloss in Sugared— I love all things that shine, shimmer and sparkle. Gloss is back right now in a big way, from sheer to highly pigmented. Don’t let the price get you. This gloss serves! Although the colors are super sheer, they give a great gloss topper. I like to fill in my lips with a liner and topping it off with this gloss. Of course they smell & are flavored like cake batter for extra hearts. Hint: If you want access to one, try finding these glosses in Dollar General. The price is right & you can usually get 1-2 shades for $3/ea or less.

Hair & Nails:

CHI Keratin Flex Finish & CHI Enviro 54 Hairspray Firm Hold—Let me be honest, I haven’t used hairspray in well over 5 years. I was styling my hair differently, my salon was using different treatments, it was healthy and I wanted to keep it that way. Recently I’ve been playing around with other fun looks and wanted to keep my hair in place for a few photos. I usually use the Keratin Flex on M-F giving me a soft hold without stickiness. The Enviro 54 is my go-to for all night, weekend looks and to keep my tresses in place for photos without a stiff, glued down look. In the morning I spray my hairbrush with a light conditioning oil to calm frizzies and gently detangle any knots, then apply a light spray of my CHI hold product. I got these in a trail size, but next time I’ll invest in the full size! CHI.com, $9.98

Fashion:

Red—I know it’s not a piece of clothing or a pair of shoes, but it is necessary to know what are the hot colors of the season to create a wardrobe full of chic. If you can spark your trendy skirt with a statement color, you are 2x ahead of the fashion game. And one of the hot colors this summer is red. From deep cherry red to fiery brights, there’s a red for you.  As a redhead, I have tried to incorporate reds into my wardrobe but I never feel they look good on me. I have been told otherwise however. So I started slow wearing black tops with red accents and a subtle red lip. Now? I’ll go full on. What’s nice about the reds this summer is that the color is going to roll over into the fall/winter fashions too. So get all pieces—camis, tshirts, cardigans, etc.—and be ready to layer! Statement Sunglasses—When the retro cat eye glasses came back into the scene, sunglasses went wild. Everything old is new again. Grab a pair of aviators or sleek cat eye bedazzled sunglasses and rock that look. Make sure your sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun and aren’t just pretty. I like to have a pair that are amber to wear with warm-colored fashions. I also have a pair of black rimless sunnies that go fabulous with a fashion forward denim outfits. Sassy’ s Current Faves…

It’s been a while since I’ve kept you in the loop about what beauty and glamour products I have found that have worked their way into my list of current faves. I think I had become comfortable in my beauty routine and didn’t really find a need to look for anything different. Although there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, we do have to realize that the products in our vanity are constantly changing… and improving! Here are a few new discoveries that I am currently crushing on:

Maybelline Hyper Easy Liquid Eyeliner – I always have a liquid liner at hand, but to be honest I do find it a challenge to get my top lid just the way I like it. Which is thin and even. Which almost never happens. I’ve used precise brushes and gels, pens, pencils, you name it. If I could “come close” to a nice, smooth top line, I’d be thrilled. But that very seldom happens. The marketing for Maybelline’s newest liner is outstanding. It even captured my attention when it first came out. Long wear, deep black color, easy-to-hold pen. That was my main draw. (Pardon the pun.) It’s definitely easier to handle compared to other pens and the wear does last all day +. Plus it is super water resistant. No problems with sweat or tears either. I like the tight line I get and don’t think I’ll tire of this liner and its look any time soon. (Maybelline.com, $10.79)

Kiehl’s Powerful Strength Dark Circle Reducing Vitamin C Eye Serum – Who doesn’t want to keep their age hidden for just a little bit? Or a lot a bit? *Sassy raises hand* The first thing that started showing how old I am was my eyes. Fine lines? I could handle that with a good moisturizing eye cream. But what about those dark circles? Rumor has it that those are just shadows from what I call “potholes” that have developed under my bottom lids. I believe my dark circles may be from a couple of other things too. Those include fatigue, thinning skin around the eyes (with dark blood vessels becoming more visible), and even just general eye strain. All of these I can relate too. I’ve tried skin brighteners before, but most just feel like a light moisturizer or greasy oil. Kiehl’s Vitamin C Eye Serum is super concentrated and goes on smooth. After only five days of using it, the darkness was noticeably lighter. Using a small jade roller helped too. Just dot on under your eyes each night after your regular beauty routine and massage it in. Yes, it’s a tad pricey but a little goes a long way for a long time. (Sephora, $50)

Makeup Revolution x Coca Cola Makeup – I very seldom jump on board when a makeup company uses another brand or Influenster to jack up the hype of new line. What I do like is a brand that gives me good products in shades and formulas that I love. I own other Revolution pallets that I absolutely love, but when I heard the Coca-Cola eye pallet was ALL frosts or shimmers, I knew it was a must have. The colors are GORG and highly pigmented. They blend together well and last all day with no creasing. I grabbed the Makeup Revolution x Coca Cola Juicy Lip Gloss in the shade Elevation as well. Although the gloss has a hint of a pink tint (three tints are available), there is no color there really. There IS an amazing taste, scent and shine without terrible stickiness. (Revolution Cola’s mascara was unfortunately unavailable when I made my purchase, so I have no input on that.) All the products have a jazzy sparkle that gives me so many glamorous looks. Jeffree Star Magic Star Setting Powder in Lavender – First, let me say for the record that I am not a follower of influencers. I have nothing against (most of) them personally and I totally respect the hustle. But when good products get caught in the middle of glamour drama, I usually say “Check please!” and GTFO. I want to keep my blog as stress free as possible. I have to say, however, that when I find a product that is beyond anything I’ve ever tried, major kudos must be given out. And that’s exactly what has happened with Jeffree Star’s setting powder. The reason I love the lavender is because a minor health condition I have can make my skin seem sallow. It’s hard to adjust my makeup when it does this. After learning so many tips and tricks from The Makeup Show in NYC from the best artists in the business, I began correcting my skin tone with a complimenting color—lavender! After applying my concealer and foundation, I “bake” my makeup with JS’s lavender setting powder and it neutralizes the yellowish appearance of my skin. It feels super soft, plus it even nourishes it as it is packed with Vitamins C & E. I seriously get a flawless, airbrushed look all day. The fact it is scented like cotton candy doesn’t bother my sensitive skin either. I’ve looked around for other lavender powders, but nobody has one. ColourPop Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Hydrating Foundation – I have said to myself that I was not switching foundation brands ever again. I had found one that was a water blend that gave me a sheer, buildable canvas. Then they discontinued it. Then age became relevant with my skin care so I had to find a foundation for specific needs. Last month, I got a subtle summer glow and I needed to adjust for that. Geesh. My foundation needs are shook. After falling in love with an eyeshadow from ColourPop, I decided to research their foundation. It actually caught my eye because the they had several different shades and age-fighting ingredients. I bought this without testing it first, but the swatches online helped me nail the color on the first try. Since I began using it, I have gotten several compliments on how my skin looks porcelain smooth. It is buildable, easy to blend and lasts all day with a powder set. I am very happy with my choice. (Ulta, $16)

Seasons are changing which means there will be some new Fall looks coming soon. I’ll break down what will be hot in fashions and accessories soon too, and the colors to look for. But for now? Sassy’s Selections for July–WITH A CONTEST SOON!

Wow! It’s… like… August! Already! Are you like me, wondering where the heck the summer is going? I swear, I just packed away my winter clothes a month ago. Then again, I might have. The weather has been cool and raining this entire season. I should have invested more $$ in rain boots instead of sandals this year.

Regardless of your weather situation, the fact remains that a new month is upon us which means it’s time to talk about Sassy’s Hot Finds. July was definitely a month where glamour and fashion needed a lot of thought since most of the weather was so most erratic – the worst I had seen in years. And that brings with it a different group of items that were must haves last month. So what did I pick up to help me stay fab and fashionable during that damp, dreary month? Let’s see…

Ginger Bliss Naturals Mineral Lip Tint: I had to go to an outdoor camping trip last month. Although it was an outdoor-type festival, I wanted to make sure my lips were conditioned. I wanted to find a lip balm to keep my lips hydrated and soft, but I didn’t want to have to apply a balm AND lip color since we’d be roughing it. I browsed on Etsy and found several people that had different balms in different formulas but I was hoping to find a “set” so I could have a couple of shades that would go with all my outfits. Ginger Bliss had just that! These little balms are made with 100% natural ingredients: beeswax, olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter, Candelilla wax and natural coloring. The colors are strong and have a deeper hue than most tints. I ordered Candy Pink (icy pink), Ruby Rave (a pinky red) and Vixen (deep wine). Not only did they make my lips look jazzy but they were also soft and it was convenient to just carry one little lippie than three or more! A great find on Etsy for only $16.00 (sold by GingerBlissBathCo)

Pantene Pro-V Serious Repair Detangler: After several years of working with my hair stylist, I finally have healthy hair. No more burnt, frizzy, split ends. I now use the right shampoo and conditioner that keeps my hair clean and shiny without a ton of extra ingredients to weigh it down and strip its natural oils. The only thing I was missing was something to leave in to protect it from getting damaged from the hair styling products that I use. And that includes things from flat irons to hot rollers…. every day. So I did some searching on my own, looked at a few reviews and, of course, asked my stylist. After several suggestions, I decided to go with the Pantene product. This lightweight spray was perfect for what I was looking for. After I get out of the shower, I lightly towel dry my hair then spray the Pantene directly on the middle and ends of my hair since that is where I want the spray to work the most. After that, I spray my hands with two or three spritzes, rub them together then run my hands through the roots out towards the ends. This gives me the just a light coating so my hair isn’t weighed down where hair tends to get oily first. Seriously… a little goes a long way! After it air dries for a while, I run a wide tooth comb through it without any snags. Perfect. It gets all the tangles out while giving them a little extra moisture, protection and strength. A great product that does just what you need. You can find this in most drug stores or department stores for less than $5.00.

Leggings: Oh I know ALL the hype is out for leggings, especially since this new shop-from-home, home-based legging business hit the scene. All different colors, patterns, designs, themes, you name it—you can find it on a pair of leggings. I will admit, I bought a couple of the “party” leggings but I started thinking: there has to be a way to find leggings in styles and sizes I like without paying a fortune. So, I began to hunt, and my hunt did not last long! My search started and ended with one click to the Amazon website. Amazon has several different “stores” that carries many styles and sizes. I ordered a couple of pairs to see how they felt. They were soft, fit perfectly, had a great selection of different sizes and colors, and were more than $20 cheaper!! Ha!… no brainer there. The company that I purchased most of them from was were sold by Conceited Co. and I couldn’t be happier with the purchase. What I really liked is that Amazon suggested tops and cardigans that went with the leggings. That was a nice touch to make complete outfits. I now have comfortable sets to wear through the fall and into the colder months. Each pair was only $10 with free shipping!

Covergirl’s Total Tease Mascara: I know I recently wrote about a great mascara I had recently found, but I couldn’t resist picking up this little goodie since I had a coupon and pretty much got it for free. In the past, I have always thought that if a mascara was really good, it probably has to be expensive. This is a great example that drugstore makeup can be awesome if you do your research. Available in four colors, this mascara has a formula that makes your lashes long, full and defined. The key word there is “defined”. The little combs on the brush separate your lashes without any clumps, making sure each lash is coated. Then, at the end of the brush is a small round ball covered with the same little combs. This part is EPIC to coat your bottom lashes individually to get a full lashes look. Then, use the same little ball to get to all the tiny lashes at the corners of your eyes. I purchased the color Blackest Black in the regular formula and it lasts ALL DAY with no smudging or flaking. I have been using this one pretty consistently for several weeks now, and I am very pleased. Great new product, Covergirl! The regular price is approximately $8 but because it is new, look for coupons and deals for different stores.

Bath and Body Works “Hello Beautiful” Scented Products: When I am going to an appointment where there might be others around, I don’t want my fragrance to make me stick out like a sore thumb. I personally think it can be a distraction or borderline rude to “bathe” in a scent when others may be around. Not every scent is appealing to everyone and some can even start a sneezing fit for those that are scent sensitive. In times like these, I like to use other products that I can layer on very lightly or a little heavier if I’m not really going to be in public. Today, I was preparing to go to a doctor’s appointment later this afternoon and I don’t want to take the chance on irritating another patient’s nose. So instead of spraying on enough perfume to last for 6 hours (cough cough!), I decided to let other products work for me. The key is LAYERING. Today, I just used my new “Hello Beautiful” Body Lotion that I am totally in love with. That way I could put the scent on from head to toe without it being overbearing, but that can last on my skin for several hours. If I wanted it to last longer with a stronger scent, I would have used my “Hello Beautiful” Shower Gel then followed it with the Body Lotion. If I REALLY wanted to get the full effect of the scent, I would use the gel and lotion, then follow it up with the Diamond Shimmer Mist for a more full scent with some shimmer as well. Any part of the routine can be used alone or in combination with the other scented products to give you a just a touch of pretty or a full-on head-to-toe smell of this white gardenia, jasmine petals & magnolia blossom bouquet. Yeay!….Spring?

According to the calendar, spring came on Monday this week. As I sit here at my desk, you might not believe that. There is a still a coating of snow on the ground from a two foot storm we got LAST week. Some of it has melted but today the temperature is bordering on freezing so the rain that is falling right now is a combination of rain, freezing rain and sleet. Fun, fun. Let your inner self feel my excitement. Can you? Yeah… I can’t either.

With the date saying one thing but the skies saying something else, what are glamour and fashionistas to do when they want to add a few new things to their fashion/glamour collection but don’t know how to integrate them into this fickle weather? I have been looking carefully for things that I can use now but can also transfer into my regular spring routine (or even summer!) when the temps balance out to where they should be. It can be frustrating, but if you do your research there are a few things you can grab now that will be great for this time of year AND continue to be a plus as the weather continues to brighten up.

So what has Sassy been using lately? Here are a few things you may want to check out:

**Victoria Secret PINK Hoodie** – A hoodie of any sorts is a great seasonal transitioning piece. If it’s cold, wear it under a warm jacket. If it’s warmer, wear it under something lighter like a leather coat. If it is getting “warm”, wear a jazzy tee and leave the hoodie opened up. The thing that is nice about a hoodie is that they are so versatile that you really can wear any type and any color in ANY season. Since spring is here, I thought I would add a really nice pastel pink hoodie to my collection. I own no pink clothes. No really…nothing. I never thought it looked good with my auburn hair. But the shade I recently got looks really awesome. The color is flattering, the hoodie fits well, it is warm…. oh! And it was on sale! Cha-Ching! **DSW’s Black Ballet Flat** – A few days ago, it was nice enough out for me to put aside boots and high-top sneakers and actually pull out a pair of flats to wear with my skinny jeans. Woo Hoo! Well, that was until I tried on the pair I wanted to wear. I couldn’t even get my toes into them! I have put on a couple of WANTED and NEEDED pounds over the winter and it seems some of it went to my feet. Maybe? It could also be from the foot surgery I had almost two years ago. I went through and tried on all my flats and realized I need about three different styles of black flats. I ordered a pair of ankle lace ups, a pair of fancy small wedges and a cool pair of flats with “studs”. Thankfully, all the other flats I have fit just fine. Flats are a must-have shoe style when the temperatures start to rise. It may be too warm for boots, but it may be way too cool for sandals. Flats come in all styles now so don’t be afraid to add a couple of pairs you like.

**Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer Crème** – I haven’t been one to use concealer much over the years. I’ve been lucky—the eye creams I have used have treated my eye area nicely, kept away dryness, and have prevented dark circles and fine lines. In my last Sephora order, I got a nice little sample of the KVD Concealer Crème and I put it on my vanity to try. This winter took its toll on my eyes a little bit. Over tired, stress, eye strain, even the sun. But after I tried the sample, I was VERY impressed. I will be honest…my face brightened right up! Not only does it do a great job at hiding little imperfections in the eye area (especially underneath) but it does an amazing job at illuminating my eye area AND face! This is great for this time of year because we often find that we need to moisturize our eyes more during the colder weather, but forget to use a product to brighten the skin around them. As it gets warmer, we can protect them from the sun to keep the eye area bright but often forget to use a gentle moisturizer. **TwinMedix Pro: Essentials E5** – About a year ago, I attended The Makeup Show in NYC. It truly was a life changing adventure, both personally and professionally. I had the opportunity to meet with world-renowned makeup artist James Vincent who was a plethora of knowledge for me. Fave Beauty Companies-2016

sephoraaislesAround this time, I start thinking about the products that I fell in love with last year. As I sat at my vanity today, I realized I fell in love with A LOT of things in 2016! Skin care, makeup, fashions… you name it. I think I have my visit to The Makeup Show in NYC last May to thank for that. I learned about so many big companies as well as “indies” that had products that were above so many others. Not to mention, I was able to ask questions about their ingredients so it could help me decide on possible items that my sensitive skin wouldn’t protest. So instead of me singling out each product that I am crushing on big time (and trust me—there are many), I thought I would talk about some of the companies that have given me items that are now a part of my regular beauty and glamour routine:

twinmedixTwinMedix: None of my makeup products would look or feel good on my face if my skin wasn’t in great condition. I had been using a “variety” of skin care products from different companies to try and get my skin to a place where I was happy. I admit, I am fighting the clock when it comes to anti-aging skin care for my face. I thought I was winning, but then I began to realize that all the different products I was using were usually created to work their best with other products from the same brand. Sometimes those sister products were hard to find, very expensive or even irritated my skin. I was kind of at a loss as to what to do. That was until I attended The Makeup Show in NYC. I was honored to meet and be able to have a little one-on-one time with the fabulous makeup artist, James Vincent. I asked him what smaller, unknown companies at the show should be on my “must see” list. His first answer?—TwinMedix. I stopped by their booth and met their fabulous President, Michelle, who was a sweetheart. I told her about the problems I was having with my skin and what I wanted to achieve in the long run. She introduced me to the ENTIRE line from TwinMedix. If I was going to try this brand, I was going to do it right and use ONLY that product….and I am so glad I did! My skin has NEVER looked and felt as good as it does now. I have been using each product faithfully since last May and I love the results. Anyone who follows her knows that she doesn’t blend in with the crowd and she is proud of it. After many years of “blending”, I finally found my voice (and pen!) and began being the sassy redhead I am now. When I am out in public, I like doing my makeup in different ways. No matter what the attire is for the day, my makeup always has a pop to it. Sometimes it’s a bold lip, sometimes a rocker eye look. When the winged eyeliner look took off, I was lost. VERY lost! I couldn’t get it to look good like some girls that came to the tattoo shop. I watched videos, I played dress up, I tried. Then I learned that it might be easier to get the look I want if I used a better liner. What did everyone suggest? You got it… Kat Von D’s. It all started with her famous Tattoo Liner. I fell in love immediately! The long wear formula and easy peasy pen design let me get the winged liner look the way I liked. It even gave me the precision of the thin pen design to create some fun, “out there” looks. My next love was her Everlasting Liquid Lipstick. It is no secret that I like to talk. If I am out and decide to have a cup of coffee with a friend, I don’t want my ordinary lip color to end up on my teeth or all over the coffee cup. I want it to stay put for a long time. KVD’s Liquid Lipstick does just that! If it is on, it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The colors she has are awesome—bold, flawless and long lasting. She even has colors that are REALLY bold, like purple, hot pink, blue and black. What I like to do is create my own color of the day. I pick the shades of Everlasting Liquid Lipstick that I want to blend, use a clean lip brush, and apply my own shade that will last. I don’t think I have ever created the same color twice! The possibilities are endless. My lip look can be as neutral or as strong as I want. In fact, when I went to order my latest KVD lip color, I had the opportunity to get a sample of her Lock It Concealer Cream. When it came, I thought I would just try it out since I don’t really have dark circles under my eyes. Well, that may be true but I couldn’t believe how “bright” my makeup looked on my face when I used it. The color was spot on (which is difficult for a redhead to find) and it carefully hid the flaws that I didn’t know I had! I was in awe and I ordered the full-sized product that week. I will be looking forward to sampling different things in the KVD line when I get the chance to get to a Sephora and adding to my favorite cosmetics. (Oh, by the way? Do not overlook her makeup brush collection. She may not have many of them but the ones she does have in her line are FABULOUS!)

makeupforeverMake Up For Ever: This is a big name when it comes to cosmetics. That’s probably because they are masters of just about everything in the industry! If you are looking for a product that you loved from another company and it recently got discontinued, I suggest you look at MUFE. They even have things I never knew about or thought I needed… but now are part of my makeup routine. One of those items is their Aqua XL Eye Pencil. I love my liquid liner on my top lid, but when it comes to the waterline on my bottom lid, it is hard to get any liner to stay there for a long time. The Aqua XL is perfect for just that. Not to mention, it is a pencil you have to sharpen yourself so you can get a nice tip for precise application. It is a product I use EVERY day. I am also a big fan of MUFE’s Aqua Seal, especially since almost all of my eye shadows are mineral loose powders. If I need to keep my eye look in place through the craziest of situations (all-night dancing, tear-jerker movies, photo shoots…in the rain), I will use a just a little on my eye shadow brush and pat it on using my shadows. It does dry quickly, so have an idea of the look you want before you start because it is meant to stay and IT DOES. This is also great to use if you want to create eye liners in wild shades. Using an angled liner brush, dip the tip in the Aqua Seal, pick up a bit of pigments from shadow pot and apply along the top lashes or in/below the bottom lash line. The bottle lasts a long time, just keep it sealed tight. When it comes to finding a foundation, I will take and suggestion or recommendations (let’s not forget about samples!) really help me decide on one I might like to try. I find my skin to be very sensitive to department store & drug store liquid make-ups. When I had the chance to pick the brain of a professional makeup artist, I asked what his go-to foundation was. He didn’t hesitate: Make Up For Ever’s Water Blend Face and Body Foundation. It is SUPER light but buildable. It doesn’t “hide” my skin but in fact makes my skin look natural and flawless. Again, the bottle is REALLY big and lasts a long time. Some might be put off by the price, but if a bottle lasts an entire year, that breaks down to pennies a day. Then, to complete my look, I like to give my face a nice dusting with an HD powder. It sets my makeup and leaves my skin flawless. The finishing powders I had used in the past left my face looking “cakey” so I was hesitant to try them again. Then I received a sample of MUFE’s HD Microfinish Powder and I’ve been using it ever since. It was hard to process that a powder could be white but it truly is colorless and anyone can use it. A nice, light finish for all day wear and perfect for movies, videos and photos. I always keep an eye on Make Up For Ever to see if they have any new items that I might love as much as these.

lamineralsLA Minerals: “Who?” you ask. Exactly. LA Minerals is a small indie company that I stumbled on while looking for products that wouldn’t irritate my sensitive skin many, many years ago. I was able to try many different formulas and shades (which they have many of!) to see what mineral powder foundation would work for me. They have samples available for almost all of their products so it was nice to try ones I liked and see after a couple of uses whether it would work for me. Well, they did. They ALL did! I ended up getting hooked on a light coverage formula (Valley Girl) for summer when I just need an all over dusting in the heat; a heavier coverage mineral makeup foundation (Hollywood) during the colder months when my skin is a bit is a little paler and uneven toned; a pure, no talc blush in a color that goes with everything I wear without giving me itchy skin; an oil-controlling finishing powder that keeps the shiny-ies away when my skin gets a little oily in the summer and during workouts; “diva dust” that works as a fantastic high-sparkle cheek, lip and eye highlighter; and pure mineral eye shadows that can go on wet or dry, contain no talc, and requires very little product for a great look. What is nice about LA Minerals is that they have a “frequent flyer” code every month for returning customers. You will never see this company in magazines, on TV, or in cosmetic stores. It is all done by one fantastic woman with a great product that thrives on referrals. I have been singing her praises for MANY years and will continue to do so! (Footnote: LA Minerals just released a pure mineral LIQUID foundation which its AWESOME, especially on my dry, winter skin.)

Paul Mitchell: If your skin and makeup are looking great, you might as well make sure you have beautiful hair too! After a horrid hair decision over 3+ years ago, I had to find someone that would fix my mistake and get my hair healthy again. My BFF at the time said he knew just the person and set up a time for her to come discuss my options. She was a miracle worker! She still keeps my hair, even today. I still have a bit of damage to my ends, but they are almost completely grown out. Whenever I would go see her for my appointments, I would ask her what items would work best on my hair to do this or that. The first item she suggested was a Paul Mitchell spray called “Hot off the Press”. It was a multi-function styling product that could be used with hair appliances to hold the style or after I was completely done with my hair for a good hold that wasn’t sticky or damaging. It was exactly what I needed and there is always 1-2 cans in my loft at all times. Since I had been “enhancing” my hair color over the past several years, it was important to find the right products that would extend the life of my color without causing more damage. PM came out last year with a fabulous line of products just for that! The Ultimate Color Repair line not only helps repair current damage but also seals in color preventing fading and keeps hair shiny & soft. This has been my go-to line ever since it came out to keep my auburn tresses bright and healthy! In addition to those favorites, I also have other Paul Mitchell styling products that I love that helps give me a fab look for the day/night. We all know that when we see an advertisement in a magazine or on TV for a beauty product, our ears perk up and we try to justify how this great product could fit into our beauty routine. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. As I have gotten more mature, I have learned that new doesn’t always mean better. Although for us makeup junkies, it is hard to turn away from something new that looks great. Nowadays, I find myself asking “Is it worth the time and money to try this or should I stick with the product I already have that I KNOW does exactly what I want it to do?” Sometimes I do venture off and try something new, but I am also finding that loyalty has its privileges…and results!
