Fab Finds in June…

4 Jul

imageWelcome to summer, Sassinistas! Sun, warmth, cool shades, top down, shorts up. What a great time of year. Although the elements can be somewhat unpredictable–ranging from warm to very hot, dry to oppressive humidity, sunshine to thunderstorms–this doesn’t have to stop us from looking our best at any time in any weather. In June, I was lucky enough to stumble upon some great “must haves” that aren’t just perfect, but also have extra punch on these warm days when keeping your look fabulous is more difficult. You may want to check these summer-friendly items out:

imageModel in a Bottle: This is one of those items I stumbled upon at The Makeup Show in NYC. I knew I wanted to try it as soon as one of the speakers said it was a must have for anyone wanting an all day look that stayed put. When I spoke to the Model in a Bottle company, they were very generous to send me a full-size bottle to try. There are days when I start at 8 am and don’t stop till midnight. From running around at the tattoo shop, handling personal appointments, meeting with clients and prospective recruiters, then finishing my night spinning fire with my local fire jammer, some days can be day non-stop. Other than refreshing my lipstick occasionally, I don’t have a whole lot of time to do big touch ups or even redo my makeup look completely. Model in a Bottle is simple but great! A few spritzes on my face with my eyes closed for a few seconds and my look gets locked in with all-day hold. No eyeshadow creasing or glitter fallout, stay-put blush and steadfast foundation… for almost 24 hours! I can see how models would need something like this is for a photo shoot but even simple glamouristas like me find this to be a necessity. No matter what life throws at you (including surprise weather changes!), Model in a Bottle will keep you looking amazing all day and night.
modelinabottle.com, $18.00
(This is also available in a sensitive skin formula too, but my easily irritable skin had no problem with the original formula!)

imageEye Kandy Glitter: Although I am an independent fashion & glamour writer, living the simple life in a loft around a historic area of NY, that doesn’t mean I still don’t love anything fancy, frilly, glittery and sparkly. I still adore my sequined tops, shimmery shoes, and sparkly makeup. This was another “must have” Makeup Show item that I fell in love with as soon as I tried it on at the show. With 60 colors available, this makeup item it great alone or over your favorite shadows for a dramatic, dimensional look. What I love about this glitter is it goes on with a specially designed brush and an adhesive made with liquid sugar that creates a strong hold without harsh chemicals around the eyes. Use the different degrees of fine grinds to give you a soft, all over shimmer or use it only on certain areas of the eyes for a look that makes your eyes pop. I’m still experimenting but I already know I’m in love with this product! With my circle of activities, glitter is something I will always feel I need. Eye Kandy gives me endless colors and combos for a bold eye look!
eyekandycosmetics.com, $24.95 for a complete starter set with one color glitter; additional glitters are $7.50 each.

imageTarte’s tartiest lash paint mascara: Usually when you hear the term “lash paint” you expect to find a coloring lash gel that just gives your a hint of color. Not Tarte’s. This mascara is made from black pigments that nourish the lashes while it coats them with a glossy volumizing formula. The soft yet defining brush coats each lash giving them a 2700%+ increase in volume. Plus the formula is super water resistant which helps keep your lashes strong all day without smudging or flaking. When I wear this mascara, one rich coat then a hit with the eyelash curler gives me the look of full, fake lashes! If I DO decide to wear false eye lashes? This mascara is great for an extra level of oomph to coat them. This may actually be a mascara that I will have no hesitation buying again…. it’s that good for what I want!!
tartecosmetics.com, $23.00

imageLumene Bright Now Vitamin C Sleeping Cream: I found this product through a campaign from Influenster. They gave me a coupon to try out a Lumene product then tell them what I thought. I had purchased other Lumene products way back in my blogging days, but my favorite product–an eye makeup remover–was no longer available at my local drugstore so I strayed from the brand. With a two coupons in hand, I hit the store again with not even an idea of what I may want to try. While looking at the limited amount of products they had, I did find this little gem. I have my daytime skincare routine down, but my evening routine was lacking just a bit. I have a great serum I use faithfully but I wasn’t happy with the evening moisturizers I had tried. This one had specific things I knew were important to my skin: it contains Vitamin C to help brighten my skin during cell renewal overnight; essential oils such as sweet almond, cloudberry seed, olive, and sunflower seed to provide anti-aging hydration; and hyaluronic acid to bind and retain water for maximum moisture to reduce the signs of fatigue and fine lines. All that in one nighttime moisturizer?… that didn’t irritate my sensitive skin? Perfecto! So far I have noticed a great difference with my skin being firmer, softer and definitely brighter in the mornings–almost to the point where I can use very little foundation for an even look. Just what my skin needs!
Walgreens, $18.49

imageGarage Cold Shoulder Bodycon Top: Working in a tattoo shop gives me the opportunity to get some great ink done by my fabulous artists. One piece, currently a work in progress, is a beautiful arrangement of roses and vines that was inspired by a picture taken by someone close to me. It took me a long time to get up the nerve to do something on my arms. I knew if I did, this would pretty much put the nail in on ever working in corporate America ever again. I was already writing for “fun” but as soon as my first article was published for money, I knew I had found my calling. At that point, I didn’t care where my tattoos were and how many I had. I was now a professional writer! So now I have great tattoos to show off and I need a way to do it with a little fashion sense. That is what is great about “peek-a-boo” shoulder tops. You can show a bit of skin without looking unbecoming, enabling you to jazz them up with accessories to fit your mood. These tops are simple, great fitting and come in go-with-anything colors. Find them online (with a coupon code) or in a store near you!
Garage Clothing, $19.99

imageNo Boundries Junior Crochet Shorts: It is definitely shorts weather, and the style that’s in right now is the crocheted look. These pretty, feminine style bottoms come in several colors and sizes and can be dressed up for a casual dinner out or dressed down for a laid-back breezy feel at a picnic. It is a no-brainer that if you need to keep cool but stay classy on a warm day, this is a great fashion item to have close by. Me? I got them specifically for one reason: I plan on wearing them with two chained/charmed black scarves tied at the hip that will will be perfect for jingling when I perform with my hula hoop or for fire spinning. Sexy, reasonable and very comfortable!
Walmart, $9.88

So let’s welcome July (safely!) wth a bang and get ready to rock the summer. Sassy has A LOT going on in the next few months so you are going to want to stay in touch to get all the details of what adventures I’ll be taking. All of this will be new to me so I can only imagine how a fashionista will make this happen with style. Am I worried? Hell no. I can flash my style anywhere, anytime! Do you have any plans for the summer? How are you going to style them up? Let me know! I’d love to hear about your adventures and how YOU rocked them!!

Essentials For Fall…..

13 Sep

My daughter is very much like her mother. In addition to her love of fashion, glamour, accessories and all the goodies associated with those, she also loves to read. That is where things get a little different. She has a four-shelf bookcase completely full of books that she has read from cover to cover. I, too, love to read, but my interest is in magazines. I have a shorter attention span than my daughter, bless her soul, and I prefer pictures over words. Hey, I admit it. That would explain why I have subscriptions to Glamour, Marie Claire, and Lucky, just to name a few. And my husband’s Game of Thrones book collection sits on my side of the bed, covered in dust.

Recently, my daughter received her latest issue of Seventeen in the mail. I am actually a big fan of this magazine and I even at my age (cough cough 29+ cough cough), I like reading it very much. The he said/she said high school stuff is something that doesn’t jazz me whatsoever (SO been there, done that) but I do like seeing what girls my daughter’s age ARE wearing and SHOULD be wearing. It also gives ME good seasonal tips for things that are hot right now, things like colors, styles and especially accessories! October’s issue was really good because it focused on fall and some “key pieces” that every fashionista should have in her wardrobe to look chic and stylish this season. I think that the article was done fabulously because not only did it focus on specific items for that age group, but it also gave generalized “categories” that any age could work from. Plus—and this is a big plus—it was based on a reader vote. REAL people like you and me said these were items THEY have and can’t live without. I liked that. I’m an average Jane (not counting my shoe quantity), and like suggestions from people like me.

So what were a few of the “must have” fall items that I think anyone—at any age—should have, thanks to Seventeen’s reader’s suggestions? Here’s a few of what they think are necessities. A few of the items I have already picked up for myself. Hey, what can I say…I like to be ready!:

Lightweight Pullover – Tanks and camis are too cold, short sleeves may not be warm enough and sweaters are too hot. You need something that is stylish and right in the middle. And a nice lightweight top is just the thing. They don’t have to be always be a boring, solid color either. Don’t be afraid to look at stripes, prints, and color blocking. And if you do go solid, feel free to jazz it up with some bulky chains or a colorful scarf!
Sassy Picked: bebe’s Crochet Bell Sleeve Cowl Top. bebe stores & bebe.com (reg. $64, on sale for $18)

Wedges – I know wedges are big. REALLY big. No… literally REALLY big, to the point where I would plaster my face on any sidewalk if I tried walking in some of the ones I have seen. I guess that’s where the younger generation has an edge on me. I do love my wedges, and I have many more wedge sandals than I do wedge shoes for fall. They are, however, a must have. Find a pair or two or six that you are comfortable in and that goes with most of your outfits. And in the mix, throw in one funky pair just for fun.
Sassy Picked: Coconut’s “Oliver” Grey Suede Wedges. Marshalls. (reg. $50, clearance for $29)

Chain-Strap Purse – Oh Chanel, we bow to you as an idol, a leader and an inspirational icon in the industry. Your line always has pieces that are immediately recognizable and eternally fashionable. They are stylish and forever classy. A 1960’s Chanel suit could be worn with style and elegance even today and heads would turn every where you went. Because they would just know. The epic Chanel quilted purse with a chain strap started a trend that still goes strong even today. Of course, some of the purses can now be more edgy, rocker-ish and flamboyant, but the chain-strap purse can go with absolutely anything and everything! A must have in any girl’s ensemble at any time of year.
Sassy Picked: Silver Quilted Purse with Chain Strap. Super Shoes. (on sale, $16)

Statement Necklace – There are days when jeans and a t-shirt could make you feel overdressed. You just aren’t in diva mode, and if your inner-fashionista would let you leave the house in Mickey Mouse fleece pajama bottoms with a matching cami, you would. But you know you can’t, so you stretch your glamourism as far as it will go, and you grab a pair of good fitting jeans and a comfy fitting tee. Still blah? Doesn’t have to be. Throw on a SLAMMIN’ necklace with an immeasurable “WOW” factor and no one will even notice you’re wearing the same jeans you wore two days ago (without washing!) Accessories are everything this fall and a banging necklace will draw the eye right to it, making the statement that you are still the glam girl that you know you are!
Sassy Picked: Carolee Plated Bezel Pendant Necklace. Bloomingdales. (reg. $48, paid $37 after discount codes and free shipping)

Skinny Jeans – I think after shoes and purses, this will be my other major fashion addiction. I love jeans. I love ALL jeans. But skinny jeans? Oh lordy. I shake my head. You gotta have a pair. Or two. Or three. Or like me… eleven. Give or take. Shhhh. No one needs to know. Skinny jeans are SO versatile. On a cool day, cuff them up boyfriend style and throw on a pair of spiffy flats. On a cold day, wear them with your favorite boots of any kind, tucked in and looking sharp. On date night, jazz them up with wedges, dressy boots, or some type of heel. My personal rule is the dressier the outfit, the darker the jeans. I have some that are a lighter worn blue with minor rips that I’ll wear with an eclectic tee. I own a few that are medium blue that go great with a pretty cami and a nice lightweight cardigan. I also have several dark blue skinnies that I love to rock out with, wearing a studded bright tee and a leather jacket, or dress up in with a lacy belted tunic. The possibilities are endless which makes them a MUST HAVE in your fall collection.
Sassy Picked: dELiA*s Ink Rinse Morgan Low-Rise Skinny Jean. dELiA retail stores or delias.com (reg. $46.50, on sale BOGO 50% off)

In addition to other odds and ends that Seventeen features in their article, I personally think that these items are MUST HAVE items for anyone ranging in age from 15-45 (give or take) for this fall season. As I always say, wear what makes you feel like the fabulous diva you are, search for awesome deals, and accessorize your brains out. This fall will give you the option to add some great new colors like eggplant, royal blue and other awesome shades that you can check out here. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone with color this season. Take these suggestions, kick your closet up a notch, and be ready for fall like the fab fashionista you are!!

For the entire article, as well as other great features, you can find them in the print issue of the October issue of Seventeen magazine.

Coral Me Pretty!

6 Jun

It’s no surprise that this season’s hot color is coral. In the past, it has been very muted and quiet, but not anymore. Pantone’s 2012 Color of the Year is a vibrantly warm “Tangerine Tango” and designers everywhere are loving it. It is SOOOO out of the box. Bold, empowering, daring, and drastic. There are no maybes with this color. You are either going to wear it, or you aren’t. You’re in or you’re out. Nothing in between. Go bold or go home.

Me?… the leader of the most elaborate closet filled with blacks and whites, was deathly afraid of any color in the orange family. I have red hair. That was enough for me. Or so I thought. On a trip to the mall with my daughter one day last week, I found I couldn’t go anywhere in any store without finding this tangerine color being integrated into fashion, glamour, makeup or accessories in one way or another. So, without trying it on, I bought a top in this hot color and it totally changed my outlook for summer. It looked fab, gave me a kicked-up attitude, and it WAS bold! How much did I like it? So much that I went out the day after and bought three other shirts in the same color family.

So I’m dancing the Tangerine Tango this summer. Very, very far outside of my comfort zone. It might not be your color but if you do decide to give it a try, don’t forget to wear it right and accessorize it well. Here are a few suggestions to get you headed in the right direction:

Clothes: If you are wearing an orange top or prefer to dare some tangerine denims, don’t OVERDO the color–break it up by wearing coral on the top OR bottom and a neutral for the other. Orange top and orange pants are going to make you look like the citrus section of your local market. A nice glistening or funky tank with a pair of denim boyfriend jeans is a great casual day look to give you a pop of color that will turn heads. Sassy’s Picks: Juniors Say What? Sequin Tank in coral, $9.99; Grace Elements Top with cascading ruffle in coral essence, $19.99 (Available at Boscov’s stores and Boscovs.com)

Jewels & Accessories: Even if you are going to go the “black and white” route for the day, there is no reason why you can’t give the Tangerine Tango the respect it deserves in the accessories you wear. So many different things ranging from earrings to headbands to purses to even shoes can bring an ordinary outfit to another level. A great store to do this with is Charming Charlie. It is strictly an accessory store, but what is nice is it is laid out according to color. So if you are looking for orange-hued items to spice up your get up, there is a section for that! Sassy’s Picks: Classic Cluster Stretch Bracelet in orange, $6.00; Rhinestone Corners Handbag in light coral, $39.97; Sunny Days Shell Earrings in coral, $4.00; Powerful Patent Peep Toe Wedges in tangerine, $24.97. (All available at Charming Charlie stores and CharmingCharlie.com)

Makeup: You don’t want your skin to look coral with a “fake bake” tan so keep your natural skin tone and emphasize your eyes and lips to catch the wave of the hot tangerine color. Remember, BRIGHT orange on your eyes or lips can yellow out your skin tone so make sure you use a light hand when applying your colors. Also, don’t hesitate to calm down the brightness of the orange hues by muting them with white, beige, or sand shades underneath so they aren’t so overpowering. Sassy’s Picks: Maybelline Super Stay 14 hr. Lipstick in Keep Me Coral, $ 6.99 (most retail locations); LA Minerals Mineral Eye Makeup in Sunset Inferno, $8.95. (LAMinerals.com); L’Oreal Paris Infallible 8 Hr. Plumping Gloss in Plumping Coral, $8.99 (most retail locations).

So you ready to go bold? Go bright? Be daring? Be dazzling? Then hunt down this year’s hottest color, “Tangerine Tango” and make your summer look POP! Take some time to try on some clothes, some shoes, grab a handbag, or test some flashy makeup shades and make this HOT season’s color work for you!

My Foolproof Outfit….

5 Feb

When I wake up each morning, I check my humongous magnet calendar on my fridge to see what my day will consist of. Because of my laid back appointments and informal business endeavors, my daily style can be classified as “feminine casual” at best. I no longer have to don the pleated black pinstripe skirted suit, thank the heavens. Bye bye, I’ll be seein’ ya… glad to say I’ll no long be wearin’ya. I will say, though, that even when I am just home for the day working on odds and ends around the house, I always look presentable. I’m not saying I diva-tize myself from head to toe, but I do put on my face and look decent not just for the UPS man delivering my package of the day, moreso for myself.

So what does Sassy Auburn consider her foolproof outfit? An ensemble that is comfortable enough to allow me to comfortably move about, look approachable and easygoing and still enable me to look and feel current, sexy and feminine. And with the fashions available nowadays—at all price ranges—this is very easy to do.

Tomorrow I have what I would consider a “typical” day: I have dry cleaning to pick up and drop off, a visit to the market, a medical appointment in my big city, visit a former client, and depending on my son’s band practice schedule possibly a chauffeur roll to finish up the day. With the weather calm and seasonably cool, this is a perfect day for my foolproof outfit:

Jeans

Z. Co. Stretch Skinny Jeans (indigo blue) – Saying it is hard to find a pair of jeans that fit me perfect is an understatement. If I get them to fit in the hips, then they are too big in the waist. If they fit in the waist, they are either too tight in the hips or too short in the crotch. I found these jeans in Macy’s about a month ago and fell in love with the fit immediately. I loved them so much, I bought three pairs: one in indigo, one in faded blue and one in black. I will say the indigo jeans fit more true to size with the others being a bit big, but they aren’t baggy big. Plus, it gives me a bit of “cheesecake space”, if you know what I mean. The dark color enables you to be totally casual with them or really dressy chic if you like. (Macy’s, $35)

Top

Stargazer Knit Tunic – Nothing goes better with skinny jeans than a nicely fitted tunic, and there tunicdefinitely is a tunic for all seasons. During the cold months, sweaters with poet sleeves or belted waists make the cozy very jazzy. As the warmer weather soon approaches, the Spring will bring with it bright, flower colors and lightweight fabrics. This tunic is a bit of both worlds. The long sleeves, scoop neck and empire waist still gives this top flare during the cool months but the light stretchy fabric allows for comfort as well as style as the temps rise. The go-with-anything pattern and colors makes this a style-statement must have!  (BostonProper.com, $79)

Shoes

Bandolino Smiley Shoe Booties – When it comes to choosing shoes to accompany skinny jeans, you are pretty much safe with everything EXCEPT sneakers. (Don’t do it, don’t do it, just don’t do it). Pumps of all sorts (peep toed or closed), boots, sandals, ballerina flats or shoe booties can really give your outfit personality. My Smiley’s are smooth black leather oxford with a soft insole, a rounded toe and a medium height (2 ½“) stacked heel. Walking in these is easy and comfortable, even on slightly slippery walkways. Plus they lace up which allows you put on heavier socks when it’s really cold out. And these aren’t just for jeans anymore. They look sharp as heck with wool skirts and tights too! (Zappos.com, $62)

Purse

Guess? Gold Coast Satchel – I have to be honest, this isn’t the exact bag that I carry when I’m out handbag1gallivanting during my day, but it is pretty darn close. I love my black Guess handbag. The single, drop-down handle is the perfect length for me. It is long enough where I can toss it over my shoulder when my hands are full, but small enough to carry by hand so as not to break my arms. The size is big enough to keep just the necessities without turning it into a suitcase. Plus there are just the right number of compartments inside to hold my makeup, cell phone, etc. keep The big “G” on the front shows people that you know style, the price tag shows you know how to shop! (Boscovs, $56)

Jewelry

Daisy Fuentes Silver-Tone Hammered Necklace – I love love love this necklace. If I’m not sure what necklace to grab with my outfit for the day, this is my go-to bauble. The large hammered circles look casual yet stylish with any type of open-neck top or dress. This necklace doesn’t just draw attention, but is also expensive looking! (Kohl’s, $18 )

Fragrance

Marc Jacobs Daisy – This is the newest “make me feel pretty” fragrance in my collection. It’s soft, daisyfeminine and playful with a slight vintage edge. Notes of strawberry, violet leaves, grapefruit, gardenia and vanilla all intertwine to make you feel elegant but not too serious. And the bottle? How can you not love the whimsical design! What is great about Daisy is it doesn’t just come in the typical large spray bottle. It is also available in a purse-size spray with refill, a solid fragrance ring, a sparkle roll on, a rich body cream and a silky, shimmery body lotion. A little something for everyone. (available at most major department stores, beginning at $30)

John Fairchild once said, “‘Style’ is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma.” Orson Welles also wrote, “Create your own visual style…let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others.” You don’t have to be wearing any specific designer or drop a house payment to feel great about yourself. Look on line or grab a few fashion magazines and see what looks are hot right now. Then pretend you are five-years old some day and just play dress up… either at home, the mall or a thrift store. Mix, match, try, play, discover. Find out what gives you the WOW factor, then turn that discovery into something that is uniquely your own. That’s the kind of style that will make you feel like a million bucks every single day!!
