Winter Whites…..

29 Dec

It only makes sense that when you think of winter, you think of white. It’s the color of snow—so pure, so rich, so bright, so GORG! I’m envious of anyone who can wear a crisp white outfit with classic elegance and style. I wear white and I can guarantee I’m dropping an appetizer right down the front. My fashion closet is made up of almost black everything for a reason.

This year I took it upon myself to integrate more white into my dressy—as well as my casual—outfits. Plus, it’s only fair to give some frosty bling in my accessories and makeup looks too. Here are a few things I already have or are on my “need to glow” list this winter:

Bow Lightweight Sweater – This sweater is so fun to wear! Leaning all the way into the bow trend, this sweater features ribbon bows allover with long drop sleeves and a high crewneck. More is more in the best way with this adorably trendy sweater. Walmart, $17.98

Juicy Couture Slip On Winter Snow Boots – Step into luxury with Juicy Couture Women’s Slip On Winter Snow Boots. Featuring a plush faux fur lining and cushioned insoles, these boots provide superior warmth and comfort for all-day wear during the coldest months. With their fashionable design and insulated construction, these winter booties not only keep your feet warm but also elevate your style game. Amazon, $69.98

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil All-In-One Shadow Crayon in Cottage Cheese – Cover your lids in color by using this highly pigmented formula as an eyeshadow crayon for your lids, or sharpen the tip and trace your lash line for a bold eyeliner look. The multi-use eye pencil can even be used as an eye primer. The shimmer comes through to give you a satiny look. Just sketch the creamy color onto your lids, smudge, and top with powder eyeshadow or wear alone. With this jumbo pencil, infinite eye looks are within your reach. Available in 16 colors. Ulta, $6

Mini-Satchel in White – it might not be a lavish dinner, or maybe it’s just coffee with the girls. Doesn’t matter… this is what you need. Holds the basics like a small wallet, cell, mini charger, powder, lippie and of course business cards & a pen! Definitely not a day-to-day bag but you can def elevate a jazzy white sweatsuit and stylish sneakers by carrying this bag!! (Don’t forget a keychain or something that matches for some bling!) five below, $15.00

Selianne Women’s Casual Fluffy Knit Panel White Sweater Dress -This easy-to-take-care-of ultimate sweater dress looks so pristine and pure, it’s almost too beautiful to wear! The materials used to make it enables you to simply wash it and dry at home. The dress has a classic stand collar and fluffy sleeves and panels. Its delicate construction hugs the curves nicely. The sleeves give you it an extra wow factor. Can go nice with tall boots, glitter heels, or fancy matching flats. For extra warmth and *pop*, wear it over a pair of faux leather leggings. You may want to add a chain or thin metallic belt. And don’t forget the accessories like long sparkling necklaces, crystal earrings and a chunky bangle. Add a to-die-for mini bag as well. SLAY, QUEEN!! SHEIN, $22.59

White fashions are not your enemy. They may be embraced more this time of year than others, but there is still nothing sexier than a classic white button up top and a pair of blue jeans. The weather a little chilly? Then break out the classic white sweater, boots or a sweater dress. Faux fur accents are always a plus. Don’t forget to accent your makeup, accenting some white highlights on the eyes (and lips!). Then top it off with classic white accessories like a small white purse, and maybe add some fluffy white gloves and earmuffs. White fashions also like pearl jewelry. You’ll be blending nicely with a light new snowfall all while you brightly stay sassy!

Pretty In Pink

19 Feb
  • Congratulations Sassy, you are officially sick. I was shot down yesterday morning when I awoke to a sneezing fit, followed by a touch of the gurgling stomach syndrome. Today I’m more congested and my tummy is speaking another language. As I lay here on the couch, nurturing this cold/flu, I am reminded of days gone by when a sick day consisted of Chicken & Stars soup, saltine crackers, ginger ale and The Price is Right. Now we have phones and tablets to keep us entertained and productive, but I miss the simple nurturing pleasures of a day home from school. That being said, today I have graduated to tomato soup, jello & Supermarket Sweep. And my homework? Writing a blog post.

Since I’m just lounging around nursing my symptoms, I figured I would put on my favorite casual pink, soft Juicy Couture track suit for comfort. Never in a million years did I think I’d embrace the color pink in my fashion choices. I’m a redhead. I thought pink would clash and look mismatched. Not only am I loving the addition of pink in my closet but I am also loving makeup products that are coordinated as well. And let us not forget about pink accessories too. So what I have found to make me Pretty in Pink? Okay, Molly Ringwald… let’s see:

·      Wet n Wild Megaslicks Lip Gloss in Sinless – Baby pink at its best! This gloss is super moisturizing with good stay power. A bit tacky but it’s worth it for that shiny, colorful look. It doesn’t hurt that it doesn’t break the bank either. (The color is true to the website swatch!) http://www.wetnwildbeauty.com, $3

·      Notyce Beauty Eyeshadow in Starborn (Shimmer Multichrome) – If a slammin’ pink eye look is in your future, this is an eyeshadow you need in your collection. Like now! I like to play this up with a nice soft white highlighter and a dark grey for a contour. Notyce has a lot of color shifting shades that go great with this shadow to really make your eye look POP! www.notyce.beauty, $18

·      Phase Zero Blush in Cotton Candy – Want a subtle hint of true pink for those cheeks? This is the color for you. I can honestly say that this is the only blush that I’ve ever used up and had to buy another. So kudos to them on that. The color is buildable and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. It’s not just for a pink themed day either. It’s definitely light enough that you can wear it everyday with everything! www.amazon.com, $21

·      Crew Neck Insulated Tee in Pink – Winter is here and I’m always cold. I’ll be cold till May I tell people. If you see me, I will probably be wearing a sweatshirt, a cardigan, or something with 3+ layers. This shirt is a super-soft tee with a wide neckline in a true pastel pink color. Not only is it soft to the touch, but it is also lined with fleece. It is so warm and it can still be dressed up or down with a nice necklace or scarf to look super classy. And it’s long enough to keep my bum warm!  As much as I like the pink, I think I need to find a few more in different colors. Temu, $6

·            Victoria’s Secret Thermal Short Pajama Set in Coconut White Lovely [pink & black] Plaid – It’s always a challenge for me to get the perfect sleeping temperature during the winter months. I find myself the most cozy when I’m wearing a warm top & cool bottoms, covered in three blankets. And the window cracked ever so slightly. When I received these as a gift recently, I wasn’t sure if I’d be too cold wearing them, but I found them to be just perfect! SO perfect that I got another set on sale after the holidays. Of course, I always need a perfect pair of socks to keep my tootsies warm while I sleep but I really find the PJs comfortable and warm. And, of course, they are highly stylin’! Victoria’s Secret, $30

·     Juicy Couture Urban-Heritage Bowler purse in Black/Pink – I am the first to admit that I am down for almost anything Juicy. I have bags, pajamas, robes, jewelry, track suits and more. I even have a metal tumbler for my favorite cold beverages. My purses however are my beloveds. I have two Daydreamers, several totes and some unique styles. My latest favorite purse was this elegant yet fun bowler purse that holds quite a bit (yes, size is everything) and just yells chic. It goes perfectly with both my pink and black pairs of winter boots. A great find on Poshmark for a good deal. (I paid $30 for this bag.)

So from the beginning of 2025 and thru this past Valentine’s Day, I have been embracing the various shades of pink that are lifting my winter blahs. Solids, plaids and prints are all front and center in my closet and since I don’t have as much going on with the cold and snow, I could wear it whenever my mood is a little cool as well—it warms me with cheer. Not to mention the makeup looks that I’m creating are borderline hot! So what will the new spring season be bringing to the color table? I’m not completely sure but don’t be surprised if shades of blue seem to sneak in there somewhere. Let’s watch what the fashion experts have to say and we will go from there. Until then?….

Time To Watch That Weather!…

17 Nov

Seasons are changing by the day lately. For example, the week of Halloween gave us showers, sun, 79 degree temps, 65 degree temps, below freezing some nights, the fan on others, tank tops for fashions and fleece jackets the following day. Five days later, we got a frost. With the weather changing every (other?) day, it’s hard to switch out your wardrobe from late summer heat to late fall cold all at once. I try to keep the fall months “optional” with fashion choices just in case the seven-day forecast has eight weather changes. If any of you live in New York, you get what I’m saying.

So what kind of outfits are good to keep out? Let’s try to get some ideas together of items/outfits you may want to have at your fingertips in case the weather changes on a dime. And don’t be surprised when it does, because it will!

  • 70°+ Unusually Warm Fall Day – Perfect thing about days like these is that it can be styled with your left over summer items that haven’t been packed away yet (if at all). Be prepared with layering items in case the day starts cool then heats up fast. An outfit with a perfect pair of ankle jeans, a favorite cami or tee, a cardigan and a comfy pair of flats is exactly what you’ll need on a day like this. Make sure your clothes and shoes are comfortable to wear because you will want to be out on a day like this.
  • Holy Sh*t It Got Cold – It’s inevitable that winter weather will show up around late fall. I remember as a teen my hometown getting a horrible snowfall on Thanksgiving day. It can happen. So what should you have if the temperatures are bone-chilling cold? Find your longest cold-weather tunic that covers your bum-bum and grab a dressy pair of fleece-lined leggings. Add a pair of combat boots with slouch socks and you are set for visiting or shopping for the holidays.
  • Time To Cook & Bake – The kitchen is cranking this season, thanks to holiday gifts and the festive cooking. If you are drawn into the kitchen this year, dress in something cozy but not too loose. You don’t want your sleeves dipping in the fudge. The oven and kitchen may get warm so wear a lightweight, well fitting short (or long) sleeve top that you can tuck in out of the way. A nice pair of cargo pants/leggings or a super stretchy skinny jean makes it easy to move around while hustling over the cookies and green beans. If you want to put on a track suit, go for it. You can always change when you are done or before a big meal.
  • A Trip To Aunt Pauline’s House – Speaking of visiting, you will need at least one—maybe four—outfit changes for the house parties, dinners and gatherings this fall/early winter. If the same people will be at the various parties, make sure you put your chosen outfit to the side after you wear them. The nice thing about visiting or traveling out of town is that black pants can be your savior. Mix and match your tops and accessories to keep you looking stylish while still feeling relaxed. Integrate those black pants, jeans or leggings into an outfit with a matching lightweight sweater (lots of people will make the house warm), a dressy cami & cardigan, or a festive-colored tunic for a fun get-together. Don’t forget the pearls and sparkles to keep in the seasonal mood.
  • The Office Holiday Party – Oh what to do for a fashionable outfit where the coworkers gather around a bowl of booze after hours. The bottom line is this event revolves around your source of income for you and/or your family… so don’t be an ass or a ho. Wear something flattering but not overdone, especially if it is held AT the office. A nice, long, flowy skirt can be the base of a great outfit without paying a ton or looking overly red carpet-ish. I doubt Aunt Pauline will be there so you can wear the outfit you wore to her house again. Remember that black pants are a lifesaver here and totally acceptable. This is an outfit where accessories can be low key yet classy. Definitely rock the pearls.

I have introduced you to the main outfits you will need this fall and into the winter season. Other than black pants/leggings/jeans and dark indigo blue jeans, what other colors are in style this fall? Look for Pantone’s shades of the season: Remember to feel good about yourself; “Walk like you have three men walking behind you.”-Oscar de la Renta”; and smile. 🙂

Oh, and don’t forget……

Define: “Steampunk”…

24 Jun

SteampunkCartoonSteampunk is…a joyous fantasy of the past, allowing us to revel in a nostalgia for what never was. It is a literary playground for adventure, spectacle, drama, escapism and exploration. But most of all it is fun!” ― George Mann

From the Oxford dictionary:
steampunk
Pronunciation: /ˈstēmˌpəNGk/

1.1 A style of design and fashion that combines historical elements with anachronistic technological features inspired by science fiction:
the essence of steampunk is homage to vintage fashion with a modern, sassy twist.

I don’t think without a proper dictionary definition, the steampunk style could be understood. Even with the definition? It’s hard to process. Anyone directly in the alternative world of fashion and design may get it. But many on the outside looking in may be baffled. I tend to think of it like this: take a Harry Potter style, give it a punk edge with some designer style and you are on your way to a steampunk look.

Steampunk is definitely not front and center in the glamour & fashion world. In fact, it’s a little underground which makes it that much more eclectic and romantic. It is definitely built around the individual and each look is unique. No one goes into Macy’s and asks for the steampunk section of the store. But that doesn’t mean you can get a look there either.

As my fire-spinning evolves, so does my look. I find myself looking at things that I like, with an edgy flair, and a mystical aura. Do I still love my Manolos? Hell yeah. But you might find them next to a pair of worn black suede combat boots with wired taffeta laces. What can I say? Style is about individuality. That’s why I love this industry.

So you want to look at some steampunk inspired items? I happen to like these items when I’ve got the S-punk urge:

Makeup: Because steampunk is a genre which embraces individuality, no makeup look is right or wrong. There are a few things that can give your look more of an edge than a general look.
**Dark lips are always a plus. Heavy outlined lips, true red lip colors or black matte lipsticks or glosses are a nice look.
**Stenciled designs such as gears, feathers and scrolls around the eye/temple area is cool. You can also find temporary tattoos to give you this look. Enhance them with black or metallic liner for an extra pop.
**Dark gold or copper eyeshadow is a MUST! And the more sparkle and glitter, the better. Add a touch of glittery black liner for a deep look. A touch of the shadow in the middle of your bottom lip looks awesome too.
Sassy Likes: Eye Kandy Cosmetics Eye Kandy Glitter in Taffy (Copper Penny), $7.50; Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in “Outlaw”, $20.00 – Sephora

Clothes: Take a mixture of the Victorian era romance, elements from the Industrial Revolution from the 1800’s and a hint of the post-apocalyptic era and you may have an idea of what the general steampunk look is like. The key is individualism–wear what you feel comfortable in and feel it represents the style that reflects you. Key pieces to look for are long, flowing dresses, regal jackets and bodices, ruffled and/or lacy tops, unleveled hemmed skirts and more. I advise people to look at what other steampunk lovers wear and see what jumps out at them. Remember to try before you buy. What is good for some may not be good for you. Looking at styles presently in your closet may give you an idea of what types of s’punk clothes might interest you… if any! It may not be for you, but if it is, there are lots of places to shop. Start with your local thrift and consignment shops. You’d be surprised what treasures you may find there. You can even find a base and embellish it the way you want. If you are looking for something specific, there are several online stores that offer options such as SteampunkEmporium.com, pyramidcollection.com or my favorite rebelsmarket.com
Sassy Likes: Rebel’s Market Black Corset & Buckles Halter Top, $32.40; Belladonna Corset, $44.95 – goodgoth.com

Accessories: Your steampunk look most likely will never be ordinary but accessories can help take it to another level. These items can fall into categories that range from head to toe. They include hats, boots, jewelry and everything in between. When it comes to jewelry, the key thing to look for is bronze. Not necessarily the metal but the color! Necklaces and bracelets with old keys, buckles and chains are a perfect add-on. Chokers made of lace, velvet or leather accented with gems, gears, keys and locks are a pretty pick as well. Boots are a popular choice for footwear. All boot heights including knee high lace up, mid-calf with buckles or low Mary Janes are always popular. When it comes to shoes, dark colors of lace, velvet or leather look fab. And those cute mini hats are always cool if you can pull them off!
Sassy Likes: Necklaces from @Fishscalecreations on Etsy; UGG “Simmens” leather boots, $169.95 – Nordstrom; Steampunk Velvet Top Hat, $19.95 -yandy.com; Black leather metal studded fingerless gloves, $22.00 – rebelsmarket.com

Mid-Life Goth Crisis

28 Jan

GothRedheadEveryone who knows me knows NOT to ask me my age. I am the first one to say, I will lie about the actual number ‘til the cows come home. I don’t look my age and I certainly don’t act my age…except for the occasional ache, pain and doctor appointment. With that being said, I grew up a huge fan of everything that pushed the limits of my generation. The makeup, the big hair, the fashions, the movies, the music. It was then that I fell in love with the “punk rock” movement. I wasn’t a huge follower of all the music that was out and evolving at that time, but I vividly remember listening to hits by The Clash, The Ramones, David Bowie (RIP), Adam Ant, Modern English and more. It was the clothing and all that went with it that drew me in. The fashions were awesome! I loved my leather jackets and miniskirts, lace tops, tight jeans, colored high heels with torn fishnet stockings, old rock t-shirts and heavy boots. The accessories of studded bracelets and chokers, some bright hair done in a unique non-mainstream style were beyond everything that I loved. It SCREAMED rebellious. My problem? My mother hated all of it. So I ended up wearing your basic honor student outfit then changed into a neon top, put on mega lipstick, melted on heavy black eyeliner and put in studded earrings before school. Then, like many other inverted rebels, I’d wash it off on the bus on the way home. I was bad and I liked it. Oh, those were the days….

Let’s fast forward to today. Even at this “stage” of my life, I like to be a little edgy. It keeps me feeling young. Although I think I am past the fishnets, tutus, leather pants (kind of), Doc Marten days—but never say never—I still like to keep my closet ranging from comfortably chic to eclectic nouveau. This past summer, I discovered a fun gathering of people who were different from many others I have ever known. They live for the day. They find joy in their own interests no matter how out there some may seem. They do what they have to do during the day but at night, they do what they want. And these friends? Well, they all have a mutual love & common bond: they love the art of spinning and performing with fire. And their fashions? I am pretty sure aren’t a top priority, but the variety each person has is striking! It is a combination of punk, Goth, individualism, comfort and performance…all in one. I will be honest, when I first met them, I was in awe. Not just at their outlook on life, attitudes towards tomorrow AND their performance talents but in their thoughts about what was awesome! They find happiness in the here and now. It is a no-judgement zone to be free with yourself and among your friends. To say the least? I felt at home. I felt I could be the “me” that had always wanted to be. And that was empowering!

After getting totally enthralled with my new adventures, I fell hook, line and sinker for my newly found interests and “freedom”. I went out and invested in an LED hula-hoop and two short fire staffs so I could play outside with fire with my friends during the summer and keep fit inside hooping when it was cold during the winter. I decided to bring out that edgy side of me that was suppressed as a teen. Managing a few days a week at the tattoo shop, you would think that should have allowed me to be expressive on the outside. Especially since that industry is a no-judgement zone as well. Sure, I could have gone wild with all types and styles of makeup, fashion and accessories that weren’t what a mature, “age unspecified” adult would normally wear. I did a little bit, but I was still afraid of being discriminated against with a “WTF?” conviction. Trust me, there could be outfits that might get me a second look from the grocery shopping moms at the market on a Monday morning. But you know what? With my newly discovered self-confidence, I didn’t care. That’s one thing my age does give me: GUTS. If I am going to take things one day at a time, I sure as hell want to do them my way.

My first mission was to embrace the clothes and makeup that were outside my norm. A little more edgy than usual. Darker, sexier, borderline “goth”. I absolutely love the dictionary.com’s definition of Goth: “a person of no refinement; barbarian”. SERIOUSLY? When does a tightly-laced corset and thigh-high boots make you a barbarian? Ugh. Listen, I will never deny I like my leather, I like my lace, and I swoon over rhinestones and studs. I like piercings, heavy necklaces and endless bracelets. I embrace tattoos, pride myself on stunning make-up and like my BOLD auburn hair that stands out in a crowd. If that makes me unrefined then I challenge Webster to a cup of tea and a “special” brownie to justify it!

You may be wondering: Is she going to change her ways? Is she diving off the deep end? No. Oh hell no! You can’t change me. I’m one of a kind, that’s for sure! I have always been and will continue to be a bit brassy, super sassy and fierce beyond flames. But can I embrace a slightly side of me that never really showed too much before that’s been laying kind of dormant? Oh HELL YEAH! And I plan on doing just that.

Let’s talk about my inner-goth, shall we? Black leather coats, combat boots, studded bracelets and choker necklaces. Rock t-shirts, big hoop earrings, bold makeup and wild hair. All of these things have ALWAYS been a part of me, but the older and more knowledgeable I become, the more I realize I can pull all of this off in a tasteful yet saucy, spunky, gritty way! Want to know how a mid-life crisis MILF goes “goth”? Check out some of the items that are helping me with that:

NYXGlossNYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream in “Transylvania” – Right now, matte is all the rage. And I can see why. That smooth, sultry look that you can only get from flat, matte formulas are hot especially with eye shadows, lips and nails. I have always been a high gloss person till I tried this product. What’s great is they come so any colors. Dark colors too! REALLY DARK, like “Transylvania”. It is not a black because it has just a hint of purple in it. But when I put it on thick, it is deep! The matte formula stays bold longer and also doesn’t dry out my lips. A formula and color I love with a price that’s even better! Perfect. Ulta, $5.99

BetterThanSexToo Faced “Better Than Sex” Mascara – When mascaras all jumped on board with the little comb like plastic brushes, I thought I was in heaven. Something that coated each individual lash, keeping them separated. What we all want, right? Well…… eh, not so much. Even though I still used the random mascaras that I bought that promised me long, lush lashes I found myself going back to the old ways with a mascara that had a fluffy brush. The problem was that they were not easy to find anymore. And to look a little edgy, a little out there, you need thick, bold, black lashes. Coat after coat. THEN, I had a come-to-makeup-mecca moment. I went to one of my favorite makeup stores and got a free with purchase sample of Too Faced’s best products. In it was their epic eyeshadow primer, a cool as hell eye liner (we will get back to that), and a mini tube of the Better Than Sex mascara. When I first tried it, I wasn’t a big fan. I thought it was clumpy, thick and got everywhere. Blech. BUT then I realized if I gave the brush a quick wipe on a tissue, the amount left was perfect! I am still using the trial tube, but I went out and got a full sized tube. It isn’t waterproof but it is SUPER long wearing, has a rich color, helps curl the lashes and keeps them full and luscious. I can’t see me trying any other mascara for stunning, rocking lashes like these! Ulta, $22.00

TF LinerToo Faced Perfect Eyes Waterproof Eye Liner in “Perfect Black” – Yes, this was also included in my little Too Faced goodie bag that was the gift with purchase at Ulta. I have a lot of favorite liners. Some are expensive and some are super cheap. This one, I have to say, is a little on the pricey side. But oh man, does it work! First, it needs to be sharpened which I love because I want my liners to have a tight, sharp line. Second, it is a gel-like formula so it goes on smooth without “skipping”. And lastly, it has a smudger on the opposite end if you want that smoky-eye look. This liner doesn’t move AT ALL! Even on my bottom waterline, it’s still there by day’s end. And when I want a deep, Goth look for my upper lid I just smudge it up and out for a smoldering look that will look all day and night. The pencil is a little longer than drugstore liners so you do get a bit more than usual. Ulta, $18.00

SallyNailsDark Nail Polish – Everyone tends to think black when thinking Goth colors, but when it comes to nails, you can do a variety of things. Today I am wearing flat white polish with black French tips. You can also do black polish with red hearts stenciled in. I like to wear black polish with a high silver sparkle on my ring finger. Be dark but different with you polish choices. You can still be stylish and chic without being a bubblegum pink perky. I like Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Fast Dry Nail Color in “Black to Black”, “Cinni-Snap” and “Grape Shifter”. Ulta, $4.99

GothAccessoriesAccessories – It is easy to find black tops, jeans, jackets, corsets in leather and lace but accessorizing your edgy outfits might be more of a challenge. I do a lot of shopping on EBay and Etsy when I am looking for something specific. There are also other specialty stores that you can browse through. I think when it comes to the general look I am seeking, I tend to look at chokers for necklaces; leather and spikes for bracelets and purses; big hoops or straight lines for earrings and anything else out of the ordinary. Don’t hesitate to look in thrift stores and consignment shops when it comes to finding unusual pieces. Someone else’s junk just might be your unique treasure. Look for these items and more at stores like Dolls Kill (dollskill.com), Rebel Circus (rebelcircus.com), and franchises like Plato’s Closet (my local one is Plato’s Closet in Schenectady NY). Rebel Circus and Plato’s are great to find out of the ordinary clothing too.

GothThriftClothes – I mentioned above about how to find some great pieces of clothing when you are feeling a little dark and rebellious. Sure, there are retail stores that entice people to buy different things for just that genre but it really isn’t about what it is…it’s about how it makes you feel. If you feel good in torn jeans, trying to wear leather pants isn’t going to allow the real you to come out. Try before you buy. And take a friend who gets it. When I first went looking for edgy clothes, I took one of my “burner” friends with me. Sometimes you hate an item on the rack and pass it right over. But if you bring a different set of eyes with you, they might lead you towards things you’d never give a second thought to. I tried on things WAY out of my usual comfort zone: graphic shirts, netting tops, cropped tees, torn jeans, dark leggings, and high boots. It was fun and gave me a bigger zone to look towards when shopping for clothes. Sure, I’m wearing jeans, combat boots, a flannel and a tee at my shop today, but if I decided to stop out to listen to a band and enjoy a drink with friends afterwards, I have something a little more extraordinary to slip into. For clothes like this? I look everywhere. Retail sale racks, thrift stores, consignment shops, flea markets, going out of business events. Any place that you might not find the norm. Not only can you get some cool things but you can get them at a really inexpensive price!

As the weather begins to warm up around me (I hope?), I am looking more and more forward to unpacking my newer, more eccentric clothes that I had picked up last year and have been adding to ever since. Not to mention, I am using this down time to play with my makeup pallet—trying new looks, styles, colors and designs. Every outfit is a piece of canvas and everything from the fashions, accessories, makeup, hair, nails and more are the paint! And what is the message you want your piece of art to convey? Well, my Sassinistas…. that’s called your attitude. Go out, be you, and create your piece of art!!

Not Fashion, Not Beauty, BUT NECESSARY!!

1 Dec

While in my car today, driving home from my day of fun which others may call “work”, I had a brilliant idea for a blogpost. It may not sound like a big deal, but any thought process after a long day IS a big deal. I was thinking about the things that I need, I have, I love… that don’t really fall under any of the major categories–clothing, fashion, shoes, bags, accessories, makeup, skin care, or beauty products in general. But certain items are a must have for me. Some are things that still shows my style, my love of glam, and my glitter-ific personality. Some may be to help my day go smoother, some help me start calmer. They may not be things that apply to you but you’d be surprised how even a simple thing can let the world know you are casual and outgoing….and all while still being exceptional. An anomaly. A rockstar. A sassy, fierce individual who’s going above & beyond. Of course, glamour ombré lipstick and glitter gel eyeliner will cause heads to turn but how about a few other things to make them look and wonder. Or things that just make your day a little brighter, a little easier, a little more tolerable. Maybe things like:

1. A stunning cell phone case
2. A fragrant candle
3. A pen & pencil you like
4. A perfect manicure
5. A GOOD cup of coffee
6. A great cup to put it in
7. A cool key chain
8. A messy hair-day headband
9. A chic iPad cover
10. An old-school notebook

So, as you think about these random things that you may have never thought about before, I’ll share with you my selections for these somewhat common items that this Sassinista chose to embellish on:

1. Apple iPhone Zebra Shell on silicone case/black & hot pink
Jazzy style, cool design, hot colors. Definitely a case that says, “diva”! Since the major part of my day is on the phone, I am going to want to get some motivation, even if it’s just from the case!
(accessorygeeks.com, $12.99)

2. Better Homes & Garden jar candle in Candied Caramel Pecan
A nice, sweet scented candle that just gives the room a homey feel as you go about your day–at home or at work!
(Walmart, prices vary by store)

3. Pentel Icy Automatic Pencils & Pentel Energel Pearl Deluxe Retractable Gel Pen
They are pink, they are sleek, and they write damn good. Plus pink makes me smile.
(Walmart, prices vary by store)

4. To give yourself a perfect, easy, at home manicure, you need three things:
* A sticky base coat
* A long-lasting nail color
* A long-wearing, fast drying top coat
If you use these three products, you should only need a mani once a week. I suggest getting Orly Bonder Base Coat, OPI Nail Lacquer, and INM Out The Door Top Coat.
(Sally Beauty, prices vary & check for sales)

5. Dunkin Donuts Chocolate Glazed Donut Ground Coffee
If you perk or press your first cup of the day, this is a great flavor to have. Mix in different creamer flavors for some tasty creations.
(Most grocery markets, about $7.99)

6. “That Metal Show” oversized coffee mug
I get that this might not be for everyone, but this cup is my fave! I’m reminded of my love for heavy metal that this great show brings me. Mix in my morning cup of energy, and I can conquer the day!
(shop.VH1.com, $13.95)

7. High Heeled Shoe w/red bottom (Louboutin-looking)
With my love of shoes never a thought away, it only seemed appropriate I put one on my keys. It’s very noticeable & a great conversation piece. Plus it keeps my husband from taking my keys!
(amazon.com, many varieties to choose from)

8. Charming Charlie’s Epic Headbands
I loooooooove Charming Charlie! Such unique pieces when it come to accessories. I really love their headbands since the variety gives me many options to look at and try. Since looking sassy is how I roll, they give me so many choices for just that!
(charmingcharlie.com or a store near you, many sales going on now)

9. INSTEN 360-degree Swivel Leather Case For Apple iPad 2/3/4 (leopard design)
My life is my iPad. It’s my writing savior, it’s my note taker, it’s my main communicator. So, if I’m going to entrust it with my information, it needs to be protected. And this cover is perfect. The good news?… It’s chic, stylish and protects. The bad news?… It was a lot more expensive when I got it! You peeps are getting a great deal!
(walmart.com, $7.99)

10. Pierre Belvedere Letter Size Snap Portfolio in Fuchsia
Yes, people, there is a these here with black and white designs or hot pink and glitter accessories. This is no exception. As I writer, ideas come to at any time, any place, any situation. Don’t think I haven’t been in a one-size-does-not-fit-all doctor sheet writing notes about the epic manicure the nurse just did. Because times like this can happen anywhere, a great portfolio is good to have with me. Plus it holds papers, business cards and necessary writing instruments to keep my writing flowing smooth. The ipad is nice, but the written word is true and dominant to me. I like it.
(amazon.com, $25.50)

So, not every day has to be spent at luxury clothing store, a consignment shop, or at the makeup display of any and every cosmetic counter to look and feel great. Sometimes overlooked things for the busy, business professional female can still make you smile and give off that aura of, “Yeah, I rock!” And they make you smile when you see them or use them yourself. Take your sass-itude to a whole new level without breaking the bank… and add a little pizzazz in the process!

Can You Create An Outfit Based On ONE Accessory?

9 Oct

Great rings, great accessories!

Great rings, great accessories!

Accessories are a necessity–HUGE necessity–in any outfit. Sometimes they accentuate, sometimes they are attention getters, sometimes they are just there to lend support.

With my not so usual job at the tattoo shop, my fashion choices are my own (with mild limits). One thing that I do have free reign on is my choice of accessories. Big YEAY for that!!!

Last night, I found an epic ring on a website called Invaluable.com . This site has so many cool, classic, modern, antique, epic pieces. And I found this awesome ring amongst their awesome ring collection that is so me! It’s black (my color), sterling silver, and has a little bit of goth appeal… when it’s put in the right collection!! So what did I put with this great ring? Take a look:

Great rings, great accessories!

Great rings, great accessories!

Edgy outfit with a lot of class!

Pieces everyone can wear!

So I challenge you to take a look at your jewelry box and accessories drawer tomorrow first…BEFORE you pick out your outfit. You may find a piece in there that is hidden that needs the right “company” of pieces around it to show off its awesome & unique flair!

Must-Have Necessities, Will Travel…

25 Sep

imageI am writing this blogpost on vacation in a cozy cabin lakeside at my favorite spot in the Adirondacks of Upstate New York along Lake George. It’s kind of off-season right now, but the leaves are just beginning to change color, there are no crowds, nights are cool by the bonfire, and marshmallows are being toasted by the bag. Fashion isn’t (totally) an issue, shoes can be casual and comfortable, and tops… well, tops just have to match and be seasonably chic. Unless you plan on staying secluded with your family the entire vacation, with no public interaction, it’s totally justifiably to wear sweats the whole time. Of course, they can certainly be Juicy Couture sweats, no doubt. You are on vacation–you’re not dead.

This vacation, I didn’t write a “What To Pack” list. That was huge for me. I usually begin planning weeks in advance. Maybe that is because this wasn’t a luxury type vacation and more of a kick back and relax vacation. I packed three styles of jeans (boot cut, skinny and capris), a few edgy short sleeve shirts, a some long sleeve shirts, a hoodie or two, flats, sneakers, sandals, and pretty much? That’s it. But even on vacation, as low key as you want to be, there are some things that you should not forget in your glamour & beauty routine. There are necessities no one should slack on. Take note: these “must haves” must be packed:

imageFacial Sunscreen – If you are choosing to bypass makeup in general during your time away, don’t forget to throw at least a light layer of multipurpose sunscreen designed for your face. It doesn’t matter where you go, what you do. There will be sun and that causes aging, at least prevent that. Not to mention, you don’t want to invite cancer-causing rays to get through. Find one that is gentle enough to use under the eyes as well. And while you’re thinking of it, get an SPF lip balm too. Fight those harmful rays as much as possible. imageGentle Face Cleanser – Even if your day only consists of reading a book in a lounge chair on the edge of the beach, your skin is still going to regenerate skin cells daily and you are going to need get rid of them each day. You don’t need anything funky, fancy, or even sink required. A good cleansing wipe before bed can be convenient to use at anytime–especially nighttime–and are convenient to pack too. Wipes actually do two things: they cleanse with a non-rinse formula and they gently exfoliate with the fabric of the cloth. Depending on your skin type (oily, blemishes, dry, aging, sensitive) you may want to look for something that matches your needs. Otherwise, a general all-purpose wipe will be fine for all types to cleanse and exfoliate. Sassy likes: Simple’s Cleansing Facial Wipes

imageBody Lotion – Yeah, some hotels give you all those little bottles of “stuff” for hair, body, mouthwash and lotion. If you can use anything?–Knock yourself out. But my body can get dry in different air, exposed to air and/or sun, using a pool or jacuzzi, or even just a difference in temperatures. This is where you would be best off getting a travel jar or bottle and filling it with a lotion that you can use and works well with your skin. Remember, try not to use perfumed lotions since the alcohol can be drying. Something rich but not sticky is a perfect (and with a light natural scent) can be a nice treat for your skin before bed after a busy day. Sassy likes: HEMPZ treats’ Vanilla Creme Brulee Delicious Body Lotion

imageimageHair Accessories – Okay, Sassy confession: I got hair extensions last week. I will be writing a blogpost soon about extensions do’s and dont’s soon enough, but for now, let’s just think of the hair you have now. Days will be windy, skies can get rainy, hair can get unruly. It’s not a bad idea to have a few accessories like a headband, a big jaw clip, maybe a soft ponytail holder, even a few stylish clips to keep your looks casual yet classy. Don’t let the weather get the best of your locks. A good conditioning spritz before you “style” will keep them hydrated while they’re in control. Sassy likes: Scünci’s Effortless Beauty Slide Clips & it’s a 10’s Miracle Leave-In Plus Keratin.

imageKick Ass Sneakers – Okay, I know fashion may not be on your mind this week, but the fact it you will be socializing some local landmarks, window shopping, some walking and sightseeing and-like me-shopping, you need something to be walking in. Everyone has a favorite footwear, and I support that 100%. Comfort supersedes style when shopping. However, if you can combine BOTH? You. Rock! I was lucky enough to find an epic pair or high-tops that scream style wherever I go. And I can walk all day in them and never have an issue. Find a comfortable pair or shoes or two or three and give them a vacation too! Sassy likes: Converse Chuck Taylor’s High Tops black with star design

So, in your frenzy to pack the bag that you need for vacation, do not forget these important items. I would really say in regards to your beauty & fashion, these items will be critical in keeping you looking young while still getting the rest and relaxation you need that is necessary to keep you feeling young as well. Don’t let yourself “go” while you get away. But trust me, it is important for mind, body and soul!

Don’t Take Away My….

11 Sep

image
Recently, I wrote about how you can get a great, long lasting stunning look with just one stop to the drug store. At one time this was not easy, but with the development of better formula cosmetics, skin care and hair products, it is absolutely possible to get a great look without hitting a high end store and maxing out a credit card. Beauty can now be achieved on less than a paycheck. If you do it right, you could do it on a big trip to a bottle redemption center. Takes time & practice, but it can be done.

I do have to say, though, that even with the great products that are available on a drug/department store retail level, there are a few things that I just CAN’T live without. I admit, the majority of my ultimate faves are slightly higher end products, but not all of them. And this isn’t just for makeup and skin care either. I have a few fashion items that would make me cry if they disappeared from my closet. The fact is, no matter what the cost or where it came from, there are some things that I would throw a major hissy over if someone took them from me. They are all part of my glamour holy grail list.

So what do I love and can’t live without? Read on:

imageBenefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Mascara – I have more damn tubes of mascara in my house RIGHT NOW than most people use in a lifetime. I test them, I review them, I am given them as samples, and sometimes curiosity of a new product just comes over me. They’re Real! came into my possession thanks to a sample from Sephora. I was a little hesitant since the “brush” applicator was very stiff, comb-like, and not fluffy like I had been used to using. It was the brush that actually sold me on this mascara! It lengthens, gently thickens, separates each lash, and although it isn’t waterproof it is “water resistant” and it seriously doesn’t move all day. No clumping, no flaking, no smudging. I was definitely sold after one use and no matter what other mascaras I’m testing or trying, I need Benefit’s They’re Real! in my drawer. I’d be lost without it.

imageLancôme Artliner Precision Point EyeLiner – I’ve always been intimidated by liquid liner. I don’t know what I do wrong, but my eyes never come out like the picture. But liquid liner is the classic example of “practice makes perfect.” And of all the liquid liners out there, Artliner Precision Point EyeLiner makes practicing easy. The foam-tip “brush” doesn’t clog up or run out before you finish your line. You want to be able to get an even color swipe without having it fade in the middle of the application. Not to mention, it comes in other popular colors so you can get a nice bold look with colors that pop. I also like the fact that you have about five seconds to smudge or touch it up before it dries and doesn’t move…. all day. Yeah, it’s a bit steep in price but a tube lasts a long, long time and saves money if you realize you don’t have to redo it 2-3 times!

imageBuxom® Full-On™ Lip Polish – Yup, I’m a lipgloss whore. I have more tubes of glitter goop than some people have shoes. Hmmm, bad reference. But I’m a sucker for trying new stuff, so if it has a good catch, decent advertising and jazzy packaging…I’m sold. But there is one lipgloss I only have three shades of and I would be lost without them. Why is this lipgloss such a staple in my collection? Well, once again we go back to the “samples sell” philosophy. I got a mini tube in the neutral color “Sugar” (a pinkish truffle). But I also have a wine/violet shade called “Gabby” that goes with anything and a bright strawberry pink called “Kanani”. The gloss is rich, thick but not sticky, and leaves your lips tingly for a pinch of plump. The colors are bold and there are many to choose from. Again, the glosses are more $$$ than an average gloss, but they do last because you need to reapply them less often and the color stays strong. I recently got a gift card so I think I will invest in a few Fall colors to keep my lips smooth with seasonal colors!

imageRoberto Cavalli Black T-Shirt – Okay, sit down because this is an epic story: One day last year, I went into my favorite “second hand” store, Plato’s Closet. While flipping through the tees, looking at the labels (because a designer item that sneaks in unnoticed is an epic find!), I see the name Roberto Cavalli on this black, logo tee with sheer zebra stripes on the back. My hands began to shake as I picked it up and saw the genuine logo medallion hanging from tag. Thanks to my years of watching Sex And The City, I knew immediately who and what I had found. I had stumbled upon a hidden treasure! I looked around, thinking this might be some kind of trick and Heidi Klum was going to pop out of a dressing room like I was in a Pranked skit or something. No one approached me, so I clinched the tee (which was my size!) like it was the last bottle of water after the Apocalypse and tried to act cool. I didn’t even look at the price tag because in my mind I knew approximately what it would have retailed for and I had to have found a deal. Holy smokes, did I. The cost on the Plato’s Closet price tag?…$6. I began to sweat as I walked towards the register, pretending I knew nothing about my find. As soon as it was rang up, paid for, and handed to me, I almost jumped the cashier. “Do you know what up this IS ?” She looked at me like I was on dope. I grabbed it out of the bag. “This is a Roberto Cavalli…ORIGINAL!” Still, a stone look on her face. No clue. Ugh…kids. Oh well!–too bad, so sad! Your loss, my gain! My days of ole watching Carrie Bradshaw and eating Hagen Daas out of the carton with a spoon on my couch had paid off. After extensive research, I discovered that the shirt I found was approximately four years old, and discontinued the same season it was released. The price new? About $350. I paid $6. Moral of the story? Watch your fashion shows, read your glamour mags and surf the net for the latest glamour news. It just may pay off. No one I see in my travels around where I live “gets it” when I wear my shirt, but I do! Oh I certainly do.

imageRampage Enamel Studded Satchel – Right up there with lip glosses, my number of black handbags is probably preposterous to the average American female. I have black purses in all shapes and sizes with all kinds of features, accents and hardware. Some have locks, some have rhinestones, some have feathers. Some are worn out, some are stained, some are basic, some are designer. All kinds for all reasons and seasons. But this specific bag is unusual. It was on clearance at tjmaxx.com and I actually stumbled upon it while looking for something else. I had just recently started helping out at the tattoo shop, and I thought an edgy, studded, rocker looking handbag with a lot of space for new items that I needed to carry with me (datebook, two cell phones, business cards, etc.) would be good. Honestly, when the purse arrived, I seriously thought about returning it. It was bigger than most of my bags, it had handles shorter than I was used to, and it didn’t have a lot of organizational features. But it was cool, the inside was hot pink which looked fab with the black exterior, and it definitely had a rocker vibe. So I loaded it up and gave it a try. I ended up carrying it for over two weeks which is long for me. What I’ve noticed, however, is that even when I do swap out handbags, I only carry them for a short while then come back to this one. I have a connection with this purse. We are compatible. It’s comfortable to me. I love that. Although it has been discontinued, it’s still a bag I could not live without. Best handbag investment I think I’ve ever made. AND it was on sale. That’s saying something!!

imageJ’adore Necklace – Like a purse is a must-have accessory, so are pieces of jewelry. You don’t have to invest a lot of money to have seasonal, in-style statement pieces but once in a while, you need to invest in a piece that is just you. A piece you can wear any time, any place and feel so comfortable in it you forget you’re wearing it. And if you take care of it it can last a long time, becoming your signature piece. Just like Carrie had her name on a gold necklace that she wore in almost every episode of Sex and the City, I have a necklace that I had to have the moment I saw it. I discovered on clearance on Nordstrom’s website. My necklace isn’t my name, but it is very Carrie-like: it’s says “J’adore”. Not only did I love it in gold, but I hunted it down in silver as well. Now I can wear my “statement piece” with whatever my outfit calls for, while still feeling NYC chic!

So that is my list of glamour and fashion “don’t touch!” items in my ensemble. We all have a few, and I’m sure the time will come to add a few more. What about you? What things can you think of that, if they were to disappear, would leave you mourning for a long while? The items you can’t imagine not being there if you needed them. They are your total comfort items, your glamour security blankets. Do you have a few too? I want to know! Share with me a photo if you have one. I want to see your must have’s too!
