Sassy…. You’ve Been Invited To The Makeup Show!

27 Apr

MakeupShow

There have been many times that I have been invited to events that involve makeup, fashion, glamour, runways, hair, nails, you name it. I love watching, talking about what is new, what is hot, what is not, even what I would want for myself. This weekend, however, I was invited to attend one of THE hottest makeup events in the United States: The Makeup Show in NYC. It features some of the best names in the business, showing what they have, what they have new, displays, demonstrations and endless samples. It takes up two floors of one of the NYC convention centers and every inch is used! In addition, there are several seminars, hands-on workshops, and endless networking. You cannot attend unless you are in the industry. You must show proof and credentials to your association with the makeup industry.

So how did a simple, redheaded writer get invited to this event you wonder? I was wondering that myself till I got a phone call about a month ago: I was being offered a press to attend anything I wanted to. Full pass! (Insert the jump for joy and mini scream here.) It’s one thing to go to the mall and look for the products by the companies you really like. It’s another to be asked to go to see what is new, what is different, various ways to utilize products, and also see companies that are not in my area. When I received the phone call, the sweet Makeup Show representative informed me when I inquired about the event, my credentials were investigated through companies I work with as well as my blog, and I was chosen to attend with the press. Wow. Just wow.

In addition to attending The Makeup Show, I was also given a pass to be a guest at the press preview the day before. At that time, I will be informed of the various seminars and teachings as well as given a “goodie bag” of new items that select companies would like to distribute to writers before they hit the market. Bingo!… my kind of thing. I always love to get the jump on what will be hot before the fire is even lit. In addition, we will be given selling points about each new item and what market it will be best to cater to. Perfect!

Now, if YOU are a makeup/hair/glamour/nails/etc. industry professional, you should SERIOUSLY consider heading to the city for one day, two days or both and learn things that can benefit you as well as your business. What was an added bonus was hearing that they will be having a special guest at the event at well. Mick Rock, a well-known British photographer, will be speaking to a select few on Sunday to talk about his career with well-known artists such as David Bowie, Blondie, Queen, Lady Gaga and more. He will talk about how his career has made an impact in not just the world of music and photography but also fashion and makeup. He is known for creating unforgettable images of these icons and more, which are featured in galleries all over the world. At The Makeup Show NYC, he will share his story, show the attendees his personal favorite pieces of work, and offer advice to makeup professionals looking to find their own style and niche in the industry. This is sure to bring some additional excitement and enthusiasm to those who will be attending. I know this will be so fascinating and inspiring to myself as a writer to hear the stories from the source themselves! (For more information, go to The Makeup Show NYC webpage and click on “Education”)

The Makeup Show NYC will feature over 75 beauty brands including sponsor brands Make Up For Ever, NARS, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Smashbox, Pinnacle Cosmetics and more. The show will be help Sunday, May 1, 2016 from 9am to 6pm and on Monday May 2, 2016 from 9am to 5pm at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 West 18th Street in NYC. A complete list of participating brands, speakers, events and prices can be found at http://www.themakeupshow.com. This will be the only east coast stop on the seven-city tour so if you are interested… I seriously suggest you make it happen and get there!

I couldn’t be more excited to be invited as a press representative to this event, so keep an eye out for pictures, information, new items, trends, and maybe even a giveaway afterwards here on my blog. I am sure I will come back with a ton of things to share! And if you are in the industry.. try to be there. It will be unforgettable!!

Have You Missed Me?

Oh my loyal fans….

I hang my head in shame for abandoning you as long as I did. I didn’t run away with another man. I wasn’t giving birth. I didn’t get kidnapped by aliens. I wasn’t the only victim of the rapture. I DID get caught in Hurricane Irene for two weeks, but we thankfully came through that with only a few minor scratches. The fact is, I’ve just been busy. I know, I know… no excuse for the tweeking fashionistas of the blogging world. But, you see, I didn’t really run away or even decided to just stand still. I’ve been moving ahead. One step and blog post at a time.

In late May, an opportunity was presented to me to do some writing for a fabulous website that I frequent several times a day. They had seen my work on here, plus I had already written a few odds and ends things for them and they were pleased with what they saw. You could say this is a stepping stone for me. My wish is that it will lead to eventually writing for a magazine! But for now…. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing and loving every word I write.

So when I’m NOT here, where can you find me? You can look me up, 24/7 right here or at:

If you are wondering which articles are mine, they aren’t too hard to find… they are the ones written by SassyAuburn!!

But, just so I don’t feel like I have left you hanging, I’ll let you know what are some things I just can’t live without right now:

ELF Angled Eyeliner Brush – I unfortunately lost the angled eyeliner brush I got from Sephora several months ago. No clue where it went. A friend of mine told me she had been shopping at Target recently and discovered ELF cosmetics. They were awesomely good and ridiculously cheap! Although I was not in need of any cosmetics, I could not pass up on a couple of their brushes, especially this one since I needed a new one. Target carries several ELF items, but their website is full of even more inexpensive goodies. It might be a brand I’ll have to investigate further. Target, $3.00

Make Up For Ever Diamond Collection Lip Gloss in Shimmering Baby Pink – I’m the first to admit I have a lip gloss addiction. This is easy to recognize if you go into my makeup drawer and start counting. The problem is that I get easily bored with my glosses and very seldom use them up… then buy more. MUFE’s gloss was something I picked up on a whim with a gift card I had and I must have liked that whim very much because it is almost gone. It honestly might be one of the first lip glosses I have ever (almost) used up in years.. if ever. Good color, great glitter and moisturizing too. Sephora, $18.00

BareTraps’ Lace-Up, Side Zip Bootie – The flat, combat-style boot is ALL the style this season and I’m right on board. These boots are so comfortable and go with just about anything. I love tucking my skinny jeans in them and wearing them with my edgy leather jacket. Rocking chic! Next week, I’m going to try them out with a frayed, denim skirt and a graphic tee. I think everyone should have at least a pair of these in black, and if you can, get a pair in brown too. (I did!) TJ Maxx, $39.99

Playboy’s Play It Lovely Perfume – Talk about prejudging. I really didn’t think I would like a perfume by Playboy. I don’t even know why either. Maybe because I thought it would be too strong, or too cheesy smelling, or maybe it wouldn’t last on me. I spritzed a bit of Play It Lovely on while waiting at my pharmacy one day, and I have to say I liked it right away. Hours later, Mr. Sassy even said I smelled good so I realized it had stay power. With notes of citrus, blackberries and juicy peaches, orchid, amber and patchouli, it comes across very fresh immediately, but its deeper sensual side comes through after a just a little while. It’s definitely not as expensive as many of the other designer fragrances on the market, but certainly ranks right up there with them. A nice addition to my scent collection. CVS, $14.99

I hope you get a chance to check out a few of the things that I’m loving right now and please stop into the MakeupTalk blog to read all of the articles I’ve written since June! Okay… well, maybe not all (there is a lot of them!) but certainly take a peek around. With the leaves changing and temperatures falling, I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about fall and all the beauty and fashion items that will be going along with it so stay tuned. Although you may only hear from me once a month or so from now on, I guarantee… it will still be the fun, sassy stuff I’ve always had in the past!!

Product Review: Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder

HD Microfinish Powder

By Make Up For Ever

Price: $30 @ Sephora or Sephora.com

Item Description: from Sephora.com:

What it is:
A universal translucent finishing powder to be applied over foundation or worn alone.

What it does:
Sets the foundation and slightly matifies skin without changing its natural contours. This 100% mineral silica powder softens the appearance of imperfections. Completely evens out the complexion for a glowing, radiant look. One universal shade for all skin tones.

What else you need to know:
It’s completely translucent and goes on any skintone. Its talc-free formula does not dry the skin and is formulated with 100% silica. Dermatologically tested.

Things I like: White in color but goes on translucent so it doesn’t change the color of the foundation/skin; good for all skin tones; talc- and cornstarch-free; very fine—not heavy or sticky; easy-to-use sifter jar; a little goes a long way

Things I don’t like: Price seems high, but since you use so little it’s a good long-term investment

Rankings:

Packaging Design: 5 out of 5

Portability/Convenience: 4 out of 5

Wearability: 5 out of 5

Shade/Color Variety: n/a

Value: 5 out of 5

Overall Rating: (scale of 1=worse to 10=best)  9.5

Likely To Buy It Again? Absolutely!

Here’s my imitation of a SassyAuburn Infomercial:

“Have you ever put on your foundation and want to “set it” with a touch of powder then realized the powder just changed the color of your foundation & skin? Do you have a nice complexion but can’t find a finishing powder that’s colorless so it won’t change your look? Do you notice the powder you use looks like pancake batter on your oily skin in less than 2 hours? Does you powder sit on top of your skin, sticking to each little hair and fuzz like wet snow sticks to a tree branch in Winter? If so then do I have the product for YOU!!!!!”

As a Sephora Insider (which, honestly, is just another name for a Sephora Shop-a-holic), I got an email about this product about a month before it was released to the public. With a small purchase from sephora.com, this deluxe sized sample was available to me to try and review. It couldn’t have come at a better time. I had just changed foundations (went from a liquid to a true powder mineral foundation), and was looking for that little bit of sheer powder to set everything up when I was finished with my makeup application. In the past, me and pressed powders have not got along. Me and loose powders have gotten along even less. With my oily skin, large pores, hormonally baby-fuzzy face, and paler than pale skin, powder was an impossibility in my glamour drawer. Pressed powders got that nasty oil film on top after a couple of weeks. Loose powders made me look like a fuzzy pumpkin since the only shades they seem to come in turned my face orange. Plus, anyone who is part of a professional photo shoot—in front of or behind the camera—knows the #1 product on the set is powder. And lots of it. I needed one…and fast!

I love the way Make Up For Ever’s HD Microfinish Powder makes my skin look and feel. It’s super fine and translucent so it doesn’t matter how old, how young, how dry, how oily, how light or how dark your skin is—it will work. It doesn’t “sit” in or on any fine lines or large pores, so it gives you an even, velvet-like finish. And because it is doesn’t have talc or cornstarch in it, it won’t turn cakey on your face if you sweat or get oily. It’s great if you have sensitive skin and it won’t clog your pores. And if you have slightly dry skin, it won’t make you look like you have fish scales for a complexion. It won’t change the color of your foundation or skin, or even take away from any blush you might already have on. And you do NOT need a lot! I lightly dust it on with a standard foundation brush to avoid it sticking to my face and making me look like a Chia Pet. You can also dust it on with a big powder brush as well. And its stay power? Awesome! Very seldom to I have to touch up my makeup during the day when I use my HD Microfinish powder. And that’s saying something.

I got my deluxe sample at the end of March, and I’m not quite done with it yet. Cool huh?

Don’t strain a brain cell trying to find a loose or pressed powder that matches your foundation, or that doesn’t make you feel like you have an extra three layers of makeup on after you apply it. Go sheer, go colorless, go lightweight, go High Def…go to Sephora (because they have the exclusive contract for it!) and get a jar for a fabulous “photo-finish” for your face!!
