Jumping On The Tweet Wagon….

10 Oct

It was inevitable…..

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a Facebook junkie. I upload photos of my family and trips frequently. I probably change my status three times a day or more. I also have over 2000 friends. Some are family, some are friends I went to school with, and many play the Facebook games I like. I have a well-stacked Mafia, my YoVille house is city chic, and I’m sitting pretty with Zynga poker chips. I do not, however, have any crops or animals in Farmville and I plan on keeping it that way. It has even been rumored that if you nag me enough to play Farmville, I will send my Mafia in to burn your crops and steal your animals. I will not admit or deny that is true, and if you ask me why Sassy’s Waste Management trucks are near your barns, I will tell you I know nothing about it.

Recently, my husband told me that he created a Twitter account. Initially I thought, “What the hell for?” I always thought that Tweeting was more of a way to stalk famous people you likes in a legal, acceptable way. I had never really gotten into “Tweeting” because I felt I could keep up with the people that I cared about on Facebook. But earlier this evening, I read in my latest Glamour magazine that in addition to following people, you can also follow brands. It was a stated that following your favorite brands on Twitter will enable you to “get pro tips, trends and special offers all in one place.” Ohhh, okay now, I’m all over that in a big way.

So today I created my Twitter account. In addition for me to keep track of what is hot and what is not in the fashion and glamour industry, I also think it will be a way to have my blog followers and fashionista friends see what hot items, deals, finds and steals I am running into while I am out and about doing Sassy things.

I encourage you all to follow me on Twitter!! Find me at:

http://www.twitter.com/sassyauburn

Please make sure you let me know that you a fan of the blog too!

I know I haven’t been blogging as much as I used to, but I promise…. I will “Tweet” more than I blog. I tend to get very involved before I do a blog post. Lots of research with seasonal themes, pictures, designs, opinions, etc. Sometimes it becomes so drawn out, an entire season has passed before I finish my entry. What can I say… I’m a chatty, wordy kind of girl. Just ask my husband. He says I’m the only girl he knows that takes a half an hour to tell a 5 minute story. But since Twitter updates are more impromptu (and have a character limit to your Tweets… damn!), I will make them short and sweet. Plus, having my new iPhone will make this easy for me too!!

Tweet at you soon!!!

Are You Ready For Summer?

26 Jun

Last Friday, Mom’s Taxi Service took its last drive to and from the high school that my two children currently attend. No more finals. No more regents. No more, “Mom, I left my gym clothes in my locker and they really need to be washed.” Or worse, “Mom I left my lunch in my locker and I forgot the combination.” The kids are home for summer break. Now my job as a parent goes from driver/tutor/alarm clock to mediator/referee/bouncer. My son, 17, is a very keep-to-himself kind of kid. There is nothing wrong with that. The only problem is that when he does decide to be outgoing, it’s when he is out to annoy his sister. And my daughter, 15, is at the age where she is “finding herself”. And according to her, this cannot be done if her brother is within a centimeter of her room or her existence. I try to remind them that deep down they really do love each other dearly but they just don’t know it yet. They try to remind me that being an only child would have been just fine… for either of them.

With a little more “me” time and less stress, chaos and chauffeuring, I am excited that I can get to enjoy some of the luxuries that summer brings. Cool drinks on the deck. Sprinklers that can be turned on for something other than just watering a lawn. Cruising in the car with the sunroof open and windows down. For me that also means fun footwear, cool clothes, sexy scents, and light bright makeup hues. This year, there are many hot (and I don’t mean the temperature!) trends that are in, as well as some classic styles that are still a must-have in your ensemble. Looking fab-tastic in the summer doesn’t have to be a chore or expensive either. Just “kiss” the season… and keep it simple, sexy!! So, in honor of this sixth month and the official start of summer, here are six of my favorite new goodies that I couldn’t live without this season:

1. A good loose mineral foundation – My skin completely goes into oil overload the minute the thermometer starts its slow rise. Although a good oil mattifier is a necessity, for me so is a natural mineral foundation. You have to beware of mineral foundations that are sold on the retail level. Many of them contain only a small percentage of pure minerals and contain other irritating ingredients such as talc, bismuth oxychloride, preservatives and fragrance. These other additives can cause your skin to become red, itchy, can clog your pores causing break-outs and in some people can actually cause nose and throat irritation. Research your product carefully, and when possible try samples of different shades and formulas before you invest in one. Sassy’s Pick: L.A. Mineral’s Face Base (available in 20 shades of three great formulas), $19.95. www.laminerals.com

.
2. Waterproof mascara – Even if you aren’t planning on going swimming, the humid summer weather will make your lashes think you are doing non-stop laps in the pool. You want a mascara that is going to stay put no matter what the weather forecast is. I found that the problem with waterproof mascaras is that it can get a very clumpy, especially if you put on ore than one coat. A trick that I have found that not only helps keep my mascara looking fresh all day but also keeps my lashes curled and lush is by layering my mascara. First, I put on a light coat of lengthening mascara from about the middle of the lashes to the tips. After the mascara dries, I curl them with an eyelash curler. Then I put on a coat of waterproof thickening mascara from base to tip, including the bottom lashes. Sassy’s Picks: Avon’s Super Extend Mascara, $3.99; Avon’s Supershock Waterproof Mascara, $4.99. Both from www.avon.com or your local Avon representative.

.
3. A little pampering for your toes – Yup, it is sandal weather so your toenails need to stand out. Plus, having your footsies exposed to the elements takes its toll on a nice pedicure. Remember to keep your feet soft in between your pedi-pampering sessions by treating them with a rich moisturizer before bed. (For an extra treat, find one infused with peppermint—it helps keep them as well!) Then give them some flash with a color for the season. Not only do you want a color that has pop, but also one that has some stay-power too. Sassy’s Picks: Avon’s Foot Works Deep Moisture Cream, $4.00. www.avon.com; OPI’s “Go With The Flow-er” Nail Colour, $9.00. Sephora retailers or www.sephora.com

.

4. Jazzy new sandals – Okay, your feet are looking pampered and lovely so it’s time to show them off. With the comeback of basic denim cut-offs and the boyfriend jeans, your footwear can be the fashion accessory to make your ho-hum look more chic and edgy. The colors and styles are endless so don’t be afraid to step away from the plain and ordinary. Hey… if Crayola can embrace over 64 colors, why can’t you?? And remember, you can be bold and still be comfortable! Sassy’s Pick: Colin Stuart’s Ruffled Sandal, $15.00. www.victoriassecret.com

.

5. A “not your ordinary” tank top – If you are like me, your dresser drawer is loaded with bland, single-colored tanks and camis to layer with other tops. But what happens when you want look hot and stay cool at the same time? Step outside of the blah box and go beyond the basics to really create a look that sizzles. With fashion embracing trims such as zippers, sequins, rosettes and ruffles, it is easy for someone to top off a pair of shorts or capris with lots flair. Sassy’s Picks: Tie-Dye Ruffled Cami , $16.50 and Sequined Tank Top, $22.50 Both from www.bodyc.com

.

6. A summer, flirty perfume – It has been a ritual of mine that a new season means a new scent. Very seldom will you catch me wearing the same scent two days in a row. And I have endless pretty glass bottles on my dresser to prove it! In the Spring, many magazines promote new fragrances that will be released in time for summer, and that is a great way to tease you into sampling something you’ll fall in love with. Sassy’s Pick: Eva by Eva Longoria, $45.00. Macy’s retailers or www.macys.com

.
Although it’s not in my list, PUH-LEEZE do yourself—and your skin—a favor and make sure you prepare it each and every day with a good sunscreen. There are endless brands with different formulas and SPFs for exactly what you need so don’t go without!! And don’t forget to sun protect the areas that often get forgotten: your lips —there is no pigment in your lips to prevent burning so find a good lip balm/color with a high SPF; your eye area—one of the first areas to show your age, so find a good eye cream for daytime wear that is safe for around the eyes; and your hands—even if it isn’t very sunny outside, rays still come through the windshield of the car and usually your hands are the closest to them so make sure you hand cream has an SPF as well. Take care of yourself, and your skin, and have a fabulous summer!!

Sassy’s “Fab Five” Hot Finds in February….

1 Mar

What did I stumbled upon that I am loving big time this past month? Here’s my list of the five items that have made their way into my cosmetic drawer or fashion closet and have become new favorites of mine:
.
1. Aveeno’s Ultra Calming Moisturizing Cream Cleanser – I have been a fan of Aveeno products ever since my skin got thrown into turmoil over a year ago and everything I owned made my face itch, burn and turn red. My dermatologist raved about Aveeno products to calm my skin and after trying a few free samples, I was hooked. In the winter, the cold air outside and the dry air inside sucks out any extra moisture that my combination skin might have. This soap-free creamy cleanser not only washes away all of my face’s dirt and makeup but also soothes and moisturizes my dry skin. It comes in a good sized tube and a little goes a long way. Available at most retail stores, approx. $8

2. Viva La Juicy Eau de Parfum Roll-On – Can’t get enough couture in your life? Well this is a way to have just enough to make you feel juicy all over! Juicy Couture has this neat little roll-on perfume in its second generation of scents that is the right size to fit into your purse, clutch, backpack or even pocket. With notes of wild berries, honeysuckle, gardenia, and jasmine finished off with a sweet touch of vanilla, caramel and praline, this scent is sure to make you feel fun, flirty and sexy day or night! And at the great try-me price, you can’t go wrong! Available at Sephora, $16

3. Avon’s SuperExtend Mascara – Want your lashes to look uber-long without being clumpy? Then this mascara is for you. It lengthens lashes longer than any other mascara I’ve ever used. It thickens as well, but without the fuzzy tarantula look. It is a waterproof formula and I find it wears all day without a smudge or a flake, yet it still comes off with regular cleanser (although I do use an eye makeup remover anyways, by habit.) The combo brush/comb separates each and every lash perfectly, and the long applicator makes it easy to get to every little lash—inside and out. Plus it comes in all shades, including blue. Available from local Avon reps and avon.com, introductory price of $4

4. Bath and Body Works’ Liplicious Lip Gloss in “Saltwater Taffy” – How can you enjoy the sweet, creamy flavor of a favorite boardwalk treat while moisturizing your lips with a high-shine gloss? Just pick up one of these little babies, especially while they are on sale! I love a flavored gloss and this yummy find just tickles my taste buds. I have always been a fan of B&BW’s Liplicious glosses and own a few already. But their introduction to a few new flavors made me go running back for more. The shade is a sheer lilac and doesn’t do too much alone for color, but is awesome for a natural look. It’s even better over your favorite liners or lipstick for extra shine and flavor. I loved it so much I grabbed one for the purse and one for home! Available at local Bath and Body Works stores or online at bathandbodyworks.com, $7. (Currently on sale, buy two get one free)

5. Any glamour item that is purple – From the deep rich plums of winter to the light bright lilacs of spring, there is nothing hotter in fashion right now than the color purple. From the fairest blondes to the darkest brunettes and everyone in between (including the auburn redheads like myself!) there is a shade to be found for everyone. And when I say glamour, I don’t just mean makeup. Purple is making a strong stand in every fashion area as well, especially shoes, handbags, and jackets. And of course, we can’t forget the always stunning eye and lip colors too. My jazzy finds include Madden Girl’s Woven Platform Sandals in purple, Victoria’s Secret, $49; Mossimo’s Satin Wrap Trench Coat in purple, Target, $40; GUESS Glamour Shine Top Zip handbag in purple, Zappos, $72; and Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in “Crash” (deep eggplant with silver glitter), Sephora, $17.
.
.
As always, I hope you dare to be different, dynamic and dazzling! Let me know if you have any hot finds this month and until next time… have a mind-blowing March!!

Splurging on luxuries…for less!

5 Jan

There are some designer stores that you can’t even mention without countless dollar signs flashing in your head.  Stores which have items that you love to drool over, but can’t seem to justify—or handle–the costs. Well, just because a high-end store has some pretty expensive items doesn’t mean you have to miss out completely. Hidden in these glitzy establishments or their websites can be great little finds, some even less than you could imagine.  Of course, their method of madness is that if they get you in the store or in a buying mood, you’ll drop a few bills and a hunk of plastic as well.  I’m telling you if you stick to your guns, stay strong in your ways, and browse with your eyes open and your wallet closed, you can make a day out of strutting the town and hitting the en vogue establishments without missing this month’s car payment. For example, here are a few things you can grab that are awesome and won’t break your bank:

.

SEPHORA

Sephora Brand Nano Eyeliner:   I love these little goodies. They come in a huge array of colors ranging from the basics through the now hot glitter neons. They are old school and need a sharpener, but I prefer that kind of liner anyways because I can get that super-sharp tip to precisely glide over the lids.  They aren’t huge liners, but they are small enough to carry anywhere and cheap enough to create your own collection. Nineteen shades come in at only $5 each.

Roll-On Designer Perfumes:   Not all of the hot scents right now come in purse-sized packaging, but with the new airline regulations, more and more of them are. There are great advantages to getting the smaller roller versions. First, they are killer cheap compared to a full-sized bottle. Second, you can mix and match at a fraction of the price depending on your fragrance mood of the day. And third, the smaller container means that it won’t lose its potency of scent by laying around a long time.  My current favorites—Stella McCartney Stella Eau de Parfum Roll-On , $17; Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Eau de Parfum Roll-On, $16; Marc Jacobs Daisy Rollerball, $20; DKNY Delicious Duo Rollerball, $20.

MACY’S

GUESS? Blondie Crossbody Bag:   Quite often, you can hit Macy’s for some super sales. But lately their handbags have been quite the steal. Crossbody bags are so in right now. Just check out Coach’s line ranging in price from $150 and above. Ouch.  Guess? has some fabulous bags at great prices even when they aren’t on sale! This bag is extra chic because it is big enough to hold a necessity of goodies and comes in killer designer colors (wine and pewter) that go with all that is in right now.  Available now, on sale for $36.

TIFFANY & CO.:

Return to Tiffany™ Mini Heart Lock Pendant:   If you know your jewelry and you know your silver, then I’m sure you’ve heard of Tiffany’s. That famous little blue box is known by many, even those who have never been to NYC. It’s not easy to make a purchase from Tiffany’s without laying down several large bills. But this little gem is a real find. It is the infamous Tiffany lock pendant with its trademark logo on the front. Granted, it is not huge, but it is genuine. Plus it even comes with a chain so you can wear it straight out of the box or even put it on one of your own. And of course, it comes with the blue box!  In Tiffany’s pure sterling silver for $85.

T.J. MAXX & MARSHALLS:

Endless clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories:  The all-knowing shopper knows where to find the big names at the small prices and these two stores are definitely my go-to places when I want a big designer selection aT a fraction of the price. The items are not damaged or irregulars and they are not (always) off season. Most of the time they are just surpluses that the designers need to move. And move them I shall—right into my closet!! This past year, for example, I found a few really awesome items at my local T.J. Maxx that easily could have gone for more than twice the price in the designer’s NYC stores.  For example– A killer silver trench coat by Guess? for under $50; a hot pink and black leopard tote by Betsey Johnson for less than $20; a pair of snakeskin print purple patent leather pumps by Jessica Simpson for under $30; and a matching purple ruffled cardigan sweater by DKNY for less than $25.  When I looked at the retail price of these items online, together they easily could have sold for over $300. And I paid $125!!!

.

It’s a fact that name brands don’t necessarily mean better….at all! But there are times when certain lines  have an edge on current fashion trends that you can’t find any place else. Or the designer just has a style all their own that you just crave (for me that’s Betsey Johnson and Guess?).  But you don’t have to drive down to the Big Apple and pay retail prices that are flat out obscene. Do a little browsing online for sales and steals at the store’s/designer’s site, hit the discount retail stores that sell the big names, and keep an eye out here for the lowdown on what is hot at prices you are sure to love!! Before long you’ll be a deal-searching fashionista just like me!

Men: What Not To Shop For Right Before Christmas…

20 Dec

The time to shop is running out this holiday season, and if you are the typical male, you probably either have just begun to think about venturing out into the malls OR you think you still have at least 5 days left. Be advised that as the time ticks away, your options are getting smaller and smaller. Which means you will enter the frenzied shopping world with limited options or worse… without a clue.  So what are possible choices for gifts to give your special lady this Christmas season?  Well, although I do not know what she likes, I can probably tell you what she doesn’t. Based on years of experience, I will share these ideas with you and the reasoning behind them so you can know what she is thinking (which puts you ahead of the curve already). Get ready… take notes:

Do not buy her lingerie. You are thinking, “Why wouldn’t she like something sexy? Something pretty? Something that says I find her hot and attractive?”  Because that might be what you are thinking when you head out to buy it but that is not what it says when it gets unwrapped on Christmas day. First off, be honest—isn’t the person that swanky outfit is really for is YOU?  Yeah, it is.. and your little lady KNOWS that is what you are thinking! She also knows that because you picked YOUR favorite color, not hers.  It is also a fact that you go in to those stores without a CLUE as to what size we are.  So who do you envision in your mind when picking out the outfit?  Yup… the salesgirl. So if you buy a nightie that you think will look good and fit Stacie the Sexy Saleschick, I’d bet money it might not be the best choice for your lady.  It’s a no-win situation. If you really want her to get something alluring, show her a store catalog, ask her what she likes and what size she’d wear… and remember!!!!
Do not buy her perfume. Unless she has taped a sample vial or an advertisement from a magazine to your car’s dashboard or the bathroom mirror with a note that says “This One”, don’t bother. What you like most likely won’t be what she likes. Not to mention, what it smells like in the bottle probably won’t come close to smelling the same way when your princess puts it on her.  And even more so?  Just because the Susan the Sexy Saleschick smells good in a specific perfume doesn’t mean your girl will smell good in it or even like it all all. If you really want your Mrs. Claus to smell yummy, get her a gift card and go with her when she uses it. Or better yet, pick her up a current fashion magazine, lift up each of the sample flaps, and ask her what is her favorite is. And let her know if you like it too!
Do not buy her appliances. Even if she makes a list of things she NEEDS for Christmas, only get her things she WANTS. No woman WANTS appliances. The only exception to this rule is if your girlfriend or wife has a hobby that involves the kitchen in some way. For example, a woman would find it romantic if you took the time to find her special spatulas or baking stones if she enjoys making cakes or candies during her down time. That is a good thing. A woman would NOT find it romantic if you get her a turbo-nuclear microwave so she can heat up your leftovers faster in the evening. And giving her things with a blade or a sharp edge only provides her a weapon to use on you if you mess up on any other gifts. If you really want to get your significant other something she might like using in the kitchen, ask her what things every person with her hobby or interest has that she doesn’t.
Do not buy her anything relating to her car. This includes gift certificates for car washes, oil changes, gas fill ups, a snow scraper, new wiper blades, floor mats, or seat covers. Even though she will insist to you that she is a modern day woman and can handle anything and everything in regards to the car herself (which she can, don’t patronize her!), deep down she still wants you to do it.  If you really want to give her anything in regards to her vehicle, a nice, feminine engraved keychain with a special sentiment is always a gift from the heart that will be cherished all year.
Do not give her cash. Dude, that’s just tacky. And shows laziness beyond belief. But you are probably saying “But what is the difference between cash and a gift card??”  There is a BIG difference whacknut! Cash means you don’t care. A gift card means you went into the store, looked around, knew there were things in there that she would like and YOU liked and wanted her to be able to pick out exactly what will make her happy. It also means you are looking forward to the day that you will take her to a nice lunch and to the mall so you can smile as she tries on clothes and shoes for hours with you. And you pretend, with your best lying face possible, that you are enjoying every minute of it more than you enjoy life itself….GOT IT?

So what are safe bets this late in the shopping season?  Well, I’m not expert, but here are some no fail gifts that any woman would most likely be happy with. Remember we all aren’t the same, but we are pretty close:

    – Jewelry (necklaces and bracelets especially)
    – Reservations for a weekend getaway (bed and breakfast, romantic suite)
    – Maid service for a month/year
    – Tickets to a show SHE would like to see
    – All the fixings for a “date night” (dinner gift certificate, movie tickets and a gift card to buy a special outfit)
    – A large, framed print of a photo that means a lot to her (a place you went this year, a special event)
    – And when all else fails, gift cards to places such as:

    * Macy’s * …………. * Sephora * …………………… * Victoria’s Secret *
    * Pottery Barn * ….. * Williams & Sonoma *……….* JC Penney’s *
    * TJ Maxx * ……….. * Marshall’s * ……………………* Yankee Candle *

Mom’s First Day Of School…

7 Sep

During this summer, I discovered that blogging is a lot like exercising. At first, it’s awesome. You have a lot of determination. You are totally into it. You set a schedule and stick to it. You work hard, you see changes in yourself, and you thrive off the positive feedback. Then, you miss a day. Then two. Then three. Then a week. You begin to lose your motivation. You find it becomes more of a chore than an escape. You evolve into the game of “creative avoidance” finding every excuse in the world not to do it. Eventually, the inevitable happens: you mumble those final words of defeat—“Ah, screw it.” That is exactly what happened with my blog over the past three months.

Of course, like any good determined exerciser can relate to, I had very good reasons for my abstinence. There were some health issues that went on. The kids took up a lot of my time. I had appointments that I could not reschedule. The cat got sick. The weather was bad. The weather was good. You know, the usual things. But it wasn’t like I didn’t think about getting back into the glamour and fashion side of life. It just got a little more challenging when my only fashion decisions for the day consisted of choosing between a t-shirt and tank top, and the glamour challenge was deciding on whether it was humid enough for waterproof eyeliner. Not a lot to focus on there, if you get my drift.

Now, for the past seven days, I have spent the majority of my time getting my two teenage children ready to go back to high school next week. This, I will admit, has put me right back in the role of soccer-mom fashionista. With the seasons changing, the yellow buses running and juice box consumption tripling, I’m getting the fad fever once again. This is good. This is very, very good in regards to my blog! It is not so good, however, for
my summer-subdued shopping habits. With the discovery of new styles, colors, fashions, and makeup items, I find myself falling right back into my old Sassy ways!

So what have I found while shopping with my two munchkins (son, age 16 going on 4—daughter, age 14 going on 22) so far this preseason? LOTS! Let’s start with the first day of school, for example. We are spending all this time making sure our kids will start the school year off with a bang in the right clothes and accessories. Why can’t we do the same for ourselves??? For us SAH-moms, there are lots of ways to be comfortable while still looking jazzy and together while driving the kids to campus in the MILFmobile. Just because it is 7 am in the morning and the coffee hasn’t entered the blood stream doesn’t mean you have to look like the leading character from “Morning of the Living Dead—The Preschool Days” while going through the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru. There are ways to appear several notches above “barely conscious” without spending too much time on getting foof’ed up. Here’s how I am going to approach the beginning of the school year:
.python trench

1. Get a super-comfy yet super-stylish jacket. Better yet, get two. The joys of having a variety of jackets is you honestly can put them over anything and still look totally together. With animal prints as well as bold colors in the forefront this season, you can find a nice trench or even a nice yoga jacket in styles that will stand out. Wear them over any casual type of stylish jeans or lounge pants, a t-shirt or cami (please don’t forget a bra—no matter how tired you are!) SASSY’S PICKS: Zebra Print Fleece Jacket, $29.99, Metrostyle.com; INC Belted Python Print Trench Coat, $74.25, Macys.com

dollhouse jeans2. Embrace and love the throw-back 70’s style distressed jeans. Hello?…McFly? They look ragged already! So it doesn’t matter if you are just throwing them on right out of the hamper or out of the laundry basket. However they look, people think that’s the way they are supposed to look! Ink stains, extra holes, spilled bleach. It’s all good.  Spaghetti stains, grass stains, splotches of pureed baby peaches, That’s not good. Leave those in the hamper. Stick to the bootcut and flared-legged styles as well. Last thing you want to do in the morning is have to lay on the bed and wiggle into a pair of skinny jeans. Those will definitely work in your favor at the crack of dawn. SASSY’S PICKS: Dollhouse Destroyed Stretch Bootcut Jeans, $34.90, Alloy.com; Grane Destructed Turbo Bootcut Jeans, $24.98, Macys.com

ecko sneakers3. Pick up a cute pair of go-with-anything sneakers and a pair of flat shoes. No one needs to be thinking heels at sunrise. If your feet are like mine, they are always achy in the morning. Find a pair of sneakers that aren’t necessarily an athletic kind. There are great styles made by designers like Marc Ecko, Sketchers and Roxy that look great but are still solid and casual. Same goes for flats. Avoid getting a pair of pointed-toe patent leather slip-ons for the morning shuttle service. Find a nice pair of soft-leather, suede or fabric ones that match anything and everything and can be worn with jeans, yoga pants or even shorts if the weather is hot. SASSY’S PICKS: Ecko Red “Phundamental”, $66, Zappos.com; “Yammy” Buckle Moccasins, $19.99, Dollhouse.com

fringe bag4. Find a fashionable “mom tote” that matches everything. This season’s styles work in everyone’s favor because solid black, brown or metallics are all in! You don’t have to change purses every morning, but you want to be able to keep your tote stocked for the morning kiddie commute in case someone forgets something (and they will!) Stock your tote with things like extra pens, extra pencils, head- and tummy-ache remedies, mini packs of tissues, a wad of singles (for back up snack/lunch money), some nibbles like packages of peanut butter crackers and granola bars, and a small pad of paper for emergency gym notes or nurses excuses. That’s just for the kids. For you, make sure you have: your credit/debit card (a second card is best—then you can leave it in there), your Dunkin Donuts Perks card, your Starbucks card, gum or breath mints, a neutral lipstick, a lip balm, a mini hand cream and a concealer pen to hide any dark circles under the eyes that may appear between the driveway and the school carport. SASSY’S PICKS: marc “On The Fringe Bag”, $32, Avon.com; any flashy tote bag by Betsy Johnson, from $25, local TJ Maxx stores

lipliciousgloss5. Keep a simple, fast, neutral makeup look in the bathroom next to the toothbrush. As soon as you are done brushing the pearly whites, give your face a fast wash with a simple one-step cleanser and then apply a moisturizer with an SPF. Lightly dust on a little translucent powder to even your skin tone. Lightly pinch the skin on right under your cheekbones and hold for the count of 5 to make them naturally pink. If you can’t live without your eyeliner, throw on a quick sharp line (don’t smudge—it makes your eyes look tired too early in the morning) and throw on a coat of extra-thickening black mascara to make them pop. Find a nice one-coat liquid lip gloss or lip color and sweep it over your lips. Finish off your look with a lightly scented body mist that is awakening and lifts your spirits! SASSY’S PICKS: AVEENO Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser, $8, CVS stores; Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder, $30, Sephora.com; Styli-Style Line & Seal 24 Hour Eyeliner, $6, CVS stores; Liplicious Lip Gloss, $7, Bath and Body Works retail stores and bathandbodyworks.com

After you’ve dropped everyone off at the academic institution of choice, the time is now your own! Hit your local java drive through or better yet, go inside with your favorite magazine or even your laptop. At least you’ll know your favorite blog will have some hot, interesting things to talk about. That’s because I’ll be at my local java place writing them. If you look across the cafe and see a redhead with a stylin’ bag, reapplying her lip gloss after drinking a mochachino, you never know…it just might be me!!!

Pricey vs. Prudent Purchases…

26 May

Dictionary.com’s definition of the word “hype” is the following:

To create interest in by flamboyant or dramatic methods

.

There is nothing bigger than the hype that surrounds a new product on the skin and beauty care frontier. Fancy packaging, supermodels with stunning looks, exorbitant magazines spreads. Money is no object when trying to entice you to spend some of your own on their newest product. But does the drama always deliver? Does the hype match the results?  Eh, not always.

Over the past few years I have invested some hard-earned cash into top-of-the-line items that were supposed to give me glamour girl lashes, luscious lips, supple skin and wrinkle-free eyes. Sometimes what I got was an empty wallet and a tube of goo that got me no place fast. Other times I’ve paid just a few bucks and got runway looks that made people do a double take. So how do you know the glamour fluff from the good stuff?  Trial and error. OR… cool review sites like this. Here are a few things I’ve invested a chunk of change in as well as their drug store dollar counter-parts that gave me great, if not better, results for a fraction of the price:

.
INSTEAD OF…

Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow Box ($38). Colors are cool, but really REALLY sparkly. In fact the fall-out from the glitter is so bad, you need a roll of scotch tape to get the majority of the glitz off your cheeks. The shades are glam, but the mess isn’t worth it.

MilaniTRY!

Milani Runways Eyes Fashion Shadows in 10 Haute Couture ($8.99) Milani offers over eight different pallets including blues, browns, pinks and flat-out wow. I find that many drug store colors are weak in pigments, but this brand is bright and easily blendable. The day I bought this collection, the store (CVS) had a Buy One, Get One ½ Price sale, so I actually got two for under $14. With 6 shades per pallet, the options are endless. This specific pallet has both warm and cool tones in bright shades to go with this summer’s fashion must-haves!

.
INSTEAD OF…

Exceptionnel de Chanel Intense Volume & Curl Mascara ($30). After getting this mascara as a demo to do a product review, I thought I had found the mascara to end all future mascara hunting escapades. It made my lashes thick, long, lush and had fabu staying power. Then when the review questionnaire came and it said the mascara cost $30, I almost choked. It was good… really good… but not thirty dollars good. Especially when it needs to be replaced once every three months.

LashBlastTRY!

Covergirl Lash Blast Waterproof Mascara ($8.49). Any junkie of America’s Next Top Model knows that Cycle 10 made you want to buy a tube of this mascara before the last model was left standing. I’ll admit, I was a mascara snob and it took me almost a year to buy my first tube of Lash Blast. The packaging was a little bulky and, well, it was drugstore mascara. My first use of it didn’t thrill me. I found the applicator a little hard to work with. But that’s because I was spoiled with my previous mascara brush. I did notice, however, it made my lashes super long, super thick, and definitely runway worthy. And the waterproof formula stayed put…all…day…long! A little extra eye makeup remover is needed, but totally worthy of the second cotton ball!! Now it’s my hot-weather, gym-workout, rainy-day, got-to-last-me-till-midnight mascara of choice!

.
INSTEAD OF…

Any designer-named, high-end, department store lipstick over $15

lipssTRY!

L’Oreal Hip Liquid Lipsticks ($11.99). I’ll be blunt and honest—I am a lipgloss hussy. I will try anything new, and if it rates above a 3 on a scale of 1-10, I’ll keep it and use it. There are times, however, when I like a little more color than an average sheer lipgloss can give me. This leaves me in a, pardon the pun, “sticky” situation since I am not a fan of tubular stick of color. Most fade or come off too easy, tastes like a plastic coffee stirrer, or just leave my lips flat out dry. I love this lipcolor because it goes on like a lipgloss (with a sponge-tipped wand), has bold, long lasting high pigment color, and even has a gentle vanilla cake scent/flavor to it. These little babies are my “can’t leave home without it” lip item, and there is at least one in my purse every single day!

.
INSTEAD OF…

Mary Kay’s TimeWise Age-Fighting Moisturizer ($22). Aah, a favorite among the home party shoppers. Mary Kay has been around since 1963 but her formulas change about as often as the Thursday night fall TV lineups. Tempting you with lots of big words like “free radicals”, the bottom line is it is an expensive product that offers what most other age-fighting moisturizers do nowadays. (A little note? Mary Kay has not signed onto the Compact For Safe Cosmetics, an industry committed to disclosing harmful ingredients in skin care and cosmetics. They do not list their ingredients on their website and have also lobbied against legislation requiring disclosure of harmful ingredients in cosmetics.)

olive oilTRY:

Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil ($-pennies). That’s right kiddies. For a supreme “night cream”, hit your local market or Walmart, stop in the cooking oil section and pick up a bottle of this little gem. Some notes about olive oil that everyone should know:

  • Almost all vegetable oils are compatible with all skin types (they are non-comedogenic and do not clog pores, even for oily-proned individuals)
  • Avoid “pure” and “light” olive oils—they have been processed and contain chemicals
  • Olive oil contains natural antioxidants to prevent aging of the skin (although we all know that sun damage causes the most aging, therefore it should be used just at night or as a moisturizer with an SPF under it during the day)
  • Olive oil contains the highest level of polyphenols—aka: “free radical scavengers”—of any natural product on the market

Honestly, if it is safe enough to put on your salad, cook your fish in, and sauté your chicken, don’t you think it is natural and healthy enough for your skin?  I haven’t found anything better.

.
INSTEAD OF…

Juice Beauty’s Exfoliating Cleanser ($22). Juice Beauty is a brand that is a favorite amongst natural glamour users. It is free of synthetic dyes and fragrances and isn’t loaded down with parabens and sulfates.  For the most part, it is a good product. It tends to be a little thick and can leave the skin feeling not completely cleansed.

befineTRY:

Befine Exfoliating Cleanser ($15). Befine is a fabulous brand that bases all of their products from natural ingredients sourced from plants or minerals. Using things like rice, cocoa, coconut and citrus, their products follow the philosophy that if it is good for the body, it is good for the skin. The Exfoliating Cleanser uses brown sugar, sweet almond and rice to cleanse the skin gently and thoroughly while exfoliating at the same time. I love their use of brown sugar as an exfoliants. Although it feels slightly “rough” when it first goes on the skin, the sugar begins to dissolve, and soon all of the grit is gone while the melted sugar continues to clean, moisturize and brighten the skin. Brilliant! I use this once a day (in the evening) while using the Befine Gentle Cleanser with mint in the morning. This actually worked out in my favor because a full-size Gentle Cleanser came FREE with the purchase of my Exfoliating Cleanser. So I got two for the price of one. A steal of a deal!

.
INSTEAD OF…

L’Oreal Elnett Extra Strong Hold Hairspray ($15). This hot salon item was not available in the US until just recently. For hair stylists, it was a must-have, must-get item. It is a staple at all fashion and runway shows, maybe second only to duct tape. I had read about it for years in glamour magazines, and even started hunting down how to find it because it sounded like it would solve the world’s hair problems. When Target introduced it in their stores, I showed up with my money in hand to grab a gold can of the firm-hold love. The hold was pretty good, I can say that. But the smell?  Oh heavens…the smell was not appealing at all. Okay, I’ll say it:  in my opinion, it was flat out nasty!

TresemmeTRY!

TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray ($5). This new product is getting a lot of air- and print-time on TV and in the fashion magazines. This new line by TRESemme promises to hold in all the bounce and fullness of your hair throughout the day. That’s a big promise for big hair! Having very thick, long, wavy hair I will say I have never found a good hairspray that can hold in my style from the minute I leave the house till I come home without using a product that ends up feeling like I have a sticky, two inch thick hairnet on my head. That is… until now. I love this line. All of the products are salon quality at a fraction of the price. And the Finishing Spray is my favorite. The spray goes on light, is not sticky, has a GREAT hold and even smells good!

.
.
If any of my loyal readers and followers happen to have a favorite product that isn’t just cheap but good, I’d love to hear about it. I’m always willing to test out and try other people’s favorites and share what I find. And these days when every dollar counts… a deal is something that is glamorous to everyone!!

Spring Is In The Air….

17 Apr

tulipsOkay, the fact is, I’ve been a blogging slug. So much has been going on… such as life!… that my mind has been focused on things other than fashion and glamour. Can you believe that? Even though I haven’t had much time to write about the latest hip styles and products out there, that does not mean I haven’t had time to shop for them. I don’t have to leave my house to be a top-notch fashionista, you know. I can go online and do any research I need to do, and then have my goodies brought right to my doorstep. In fact, one day I had so much stuff come, I considered leaving a fruit and cheese platter outside for the delivery men to pick at.

Since the last time I blogged, a major thing has happened: Spring arrived! Living in Upstate NY, it hasn’t been the most alluring Spring I have seen in my lifetime. To say the least, I have not packed away any of my boots, coats or sweaters. But that doesn’t mean I’m not getting ready for the new beginnings that spring has to offer. So as I expand my closet and cosmetic drawer for the new season, I figured I would let you know what I think are “must have” items right now….

.

nailpolishA killer Spring-colored nail polish – You’ve spent all winter wearing dark, warm colors to match your cold weather attire. Now it’s time for some fun! Look at the colors of flowers sprouting up around you. Yellow, fuschia, lilac, corals. They are bright and cheery and they just bring a smile to your face whenever you see them. So why not take them with you everywhere by putting them on your fingers and toes!

eyelinerA stay-put waterproof eyeliner and mascara – With constant April showers bringing May flowers, it’s a necessity that your eye makeup stay put during the seasonal sprinkles and downpours. Even if your eye makeup is water resistant, you may notice it has trouble sitting still on your eyes. Especially if your skin begins to kick in a little extra oil during the more humid days. It may take a little extra time and makeup remover to get off at night, but it will be well worth it during the day!
Sassy’s Faves: Sephora Brand Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner (Sephora.com) and Covergirl Waterproof Lash Blast Mascara (most drug stores)

bbwA new scent to jazz your senses – You’ve been stuck inside all winter. Imbedded in your brain are the smells of pine trees, musty basements, and wet gloves and scarves. It’s time to open up the windows and immerse your body in a scent that will lift your spirits. Choose something light, maybe with notes of gentle flowers or citrus. And rather hose yourself down with your new fragrance each day, layer it in different ways. Sometimes just a body lotion, dry oil spray or body mist can be just enough to tease the senses!

flatsA pair of metallic flats – No doubt, metals are in!! Silver, bronze and gold. They are adorning our tops, enhancing our jeans, and embellishing our accessories. Bring your new favorite spring outfit to life with a pair of matching flats that coincide with the metal in your attire. Remember, don’t turn yourself into a disco ball. A belt, a pair of jazzy earrings and a matching pair of flat shoes in the same metal shade is just enough to make your look pop!

betsypurse1A bold handbag – Remember the day when your handbag had to match your shoes? Basic black, mocha brown, ivory cream. Blah blah blah. It’s time to live a little! Today’s top designers are not afraid to play with colors and patterns as well as rhinestones and studs. And you shouldn’t either! They say a man’s watch is the definition of his style. I think this is true with a woman’s bag. Whether it is a hobo, swing bag, clutch or shoulder tote, step outside the box and have some fun!

1st Annual “Sassy’s Slammin Style Awards” (part two)

14 Mar

Today, I will conclude my 1st Annual Sassy’s Slammin’ Style Awards. A couple of weeks ago, I handed out the little bronze shoe award to different items in the field of fashion and accessories. Today I will honor items that were discovered this year that keep me looking my youthful best on a day-to-day basis. These skin care and makeup products might not be new to the retail market, but they are new in my routine. Maybe they came my way via a sample, advertisement or referral. No matter. They are award-worthy. So, a round of applause to…..

Best Performance By A Facial Moisturizer

moisturizerRÉNERGIE MICROLIFT R.A.R.E.™ Superior Lifting Cream SPF 15 Sunscreen by Lancome – Just like a movie trailer, samples are a tease to get the public interested in their feature so when it becomes available, you’ll want to be the first in line to be a part of it. That’s how I was lured into falling in love with this moisturizer. Lancome managed to put  age-fighting ingredients as well as a decent SPF into this rich cream that keeps my face smooth all day long. After one week of usage, I noticed an immediate difference in the texture and tone of my face. I no longer had uneven redness, my fine lines were less noticeable and my face was softer. With most products that contain an SPF, I was worried my sensitive skin would freak out, especially since it contained so many other high tech ingredients. But after using it the first week, I was happy to see that it didn’t. I was also very happy that I was able to find ONE product that was able to do the job of three. The price, I will say is steep ($80)! But the jar is quite large and the amount you use is very small. I think it is very possible that it will last well over 6 months. (Available at Sephora.com)

.

Best Performance By An Eye Cream

eye-creamEye Believe by Philosophy – If keeping your face looking young is as important to you as drinking bottled water, then keeping your eyes looking young and wrinkle-free should be as important as taking the cap off of the bottled water! It is a fact that your eyes are one of the key indicators of aging. You want an eye cream that keeps the skin in the eye area moist and well hydrated. BUT… here’s the key… if you get a cream that is too rich, you can actually clog the small pores around the eye causing tiny clusters of little white bumps. That’s bad. Very bad. I tried this eye cream for a week and loved it almost immediately. It’s a silky cream that isn’t too heavy or thick, but still has all of the age-fighting peptides that are crucial in youthful looking eyes. It glides on with a powder-like finish so you can put your makeup on right over it and not have to worry about any greasy residue causing your eye makeup or foundation to slide off your face. Again, a little goes a long way. I’m just finishing up my first tube, and I’ve had it for almost a year. (Available at Sephora retail stores and Sephora.com)

Best Designer Performance By A Drug Store Product

shimmer1Lip Shimmer by Burt’s Bees – The name Burt’s Bees is as well-known in the glamour industry as Coke is in the area of beverages. I will admit, I’ve read and heard fabulous things about their lip products but had never bought a single item. Every makeup review site I have ever written for or looked on has endless compliments about the Lip Shimmer products. Maybe I was just being a makeup snob, thinking that an inexpensive skinny little drug store tube could actually be so great. Well, I guess the crowd was right on this one! This long-lasting sheer shimmered color infused into a vitamin-enriched, natural balm is perfect for moisturizing my lips for an extended period of time and giving them a designer look. Plus the slight mint tingle is soothing as well. Available in 11 various colors, this little goodie is now a constant in my purse while being easy on the wallet! (Available at most drug and retail stores)

Best Supporting Role In A Hair-Styling Situation

hairstufffrizz Wave Shaping, Curl Defining No Frizz Styling Cream (for Medium to Thick Hair) by Living Proof – While returning a hair product that I had purchased recently because it basically turned my hair into a glob of matted muck, my favorite salesgirl clued me in to this hot new product. She told me that The Today Show featured the frizz line on a recent episode, and before 5pm they were completely sold out of the product. What makes Living Proof’s line of anti-frizz products so unique is that they are designed for several different types of hair. They have specific items just for fine/medium, medium/thick and thick/course hair. And if you aren’t sure exactly what group you are in? They have a guide to help you find your formula. I have just a touch of wave in my color-treated, thick hair and I wanted a product that would enhance that without making it feel gluey. I wanted something to moisturize my hair while still controlling frizz. I don’t ask for much, do I? But they had exactly that! Not only was this light, nicely scented solution able to do all of what I wanted, but they also managed to create it in a way that actually repelled dirt! If I don’t wash my hair on Day 2, it’s no big deal… it looks just as fresh, soft and clean as it did on Day 1. Say goodbye to hiding under the hat on bad hair days!! (Available at Sephora retail stores and Sephora.com)

.

Best Performance By A Foreign Fragrance

perfume1L’Eau The One by Dolce & Gabbana – Sometimes you will get a whiff of a fragrance that smells totally unique, completely different from any other scent that you usually wear. It intrigues you so much that you keep sniffing your wrist or the little cardboard card where you spritzed a test spray to see if it jazzes you as much after an hour as it did when you first tried it. That’s what I did when I tried D & G’s newest fragrance. Its description of having a “fruity, head-turning twist” is dead on. It is a more glamorous scent with a hint of diva-tude than your average citrus-infused perfume, but still appealing enough to wear with anything and everything… from jeans and a glitter t-shirt to a backless evening gown. (Available at Nordstrom.com)

The Kitchen Facial….

28 Jan

If you’ve ever been in a Macy’s, Bloomingdales or Sephora, then I’m sure you can see how someone could easily spend hundreds of dollars trying to keep themselves looking young. Between cleansers, moisturizers, toners, masks, scrubs, firmers, softeners, lifters, tigheners, and everything in between, the world of skin care and glamour is enough to make any consumer crazy… and bankrupt! Are all of those funky ingredients necessary when it comes to keeping you looking your best? Depends. Some people swear by the “’what’s new & what’s hot” mainstream products. Others, like myself, find that the more involved a product is, the more likely my sensitive skin is to flip out from it.

After a nasty breakout from an anti-aging night cream last winter, I researched online what I could use to calm my skin down. I made a homemade mask of specific kitchen products, slathered it all over my blotchy face twice a day, and watched as my skin went from raging red to peaceful pale. This triggered me to look up other natural items and recipes that might help keep my appearance at an even keel. The information I found would change my skin care routine forever.

Since my troubles mainly occur in winter because the cold temperatures, dry indoor heat, biter winds and the nasty snow glare turn my face into a dry flaky mess, this is when I put away my department store cosmetics and start hitting the refrigerator and cabinets for the goodies that help me the most. The recipes?… Simple. The cost?… pennies. The results?… priceless.

Here is my skin care regime from now until further notice:

breakfast1Cleanser/Mask: “Breakfast In A Jar”

½ banana mashed, 1 tbs. heavy cream, ½ aloe leaf pulp, 1 tbs. finely ground oatmeal, 1 tsp. honey.

Not only does this cleanser work great for removing makeup but it also smells great and softens the skin. The bananas and heavy cream are rich in protein and fat which helps moisturize and smooth the skin. Aloe pulp has healing properties and is an anti-inflammatory. The oatmeal has soothing properties to calm any redness or irritation. And the honey? Honey naturally moisturizes, is packed with vitamins and antioxidants, and contains a natural acid which helps the skin’s cell renewal. Once you mix all of the ingredients together, you put the “goop” in a jar or small Tupperware cup and keep it in the refrigerator till ready to use. The bananas will cause the top layer of the cleanser to turn dark after a couple of days, but that doesn’t mean it is spoiled. Scrape it off, and keep using it. I suggest you make a new batch every 7-10 days to keep it fresh. To use: put mixture all over your face, let it sit for a minute or two, Rinse with cool water. Use morning and evening. (FYI—sometimes it is easier to buy a small jar of organic bananas baby food. It’s easier to work with and mixes smoother.)

brown-sugarExfoliate: Brown Sugar

Sugar is a natural and inexpensive way to include alpha-hydroxy acids in your skincare program. Usually to get the benefits of alpha-hydroxy acids, you have to schedule appointments with a dermatologist for various types of peels. By getting sugar into your routine at home, you will experience all of the benefits without the inflated price. Brown sugar is a gentler grain sugar and is not as rough as regular table sugar. To use: once a week in the evening, put a small amount (½ tsp.) of brown sugar in the palm of your hand then add your “Breakfast in a Jar” cleanser to it. Rub together then gently apply to your face in a circular motion. Rinse with cool water.

tea1Toner: Chamomile Tea

A toners main purpose is to remove any last traces of cleanser and makeup. Many cosmetic lines add alcohol to their toners which is a disaster to dry skin. A winter toner should be gentle, refreshing, soothing and still do its job. Chamomile is the perfect herb for that. Take an all-natural decaffeinated chamomile tea bag and let it steep in ½ cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Remove bag (do not squeeze it out) and discard. Keep cooled tea in the refrigerator and use on a cotton ball after cleansing or whenever a clean face needs a little soothing. Make a new toner once a week.

olive-oilMoisturizer: Olive Oil

Nothing fancy here. Olive oil is an excellent moisturizer because it attracts and holds moisture close to the skin and forms a breathable film to prevent loss of internal moisture. And its anti-oxidants help to prevent dryness and wrinkles. Go to the supermarket and buy a bottle of organic extra virgin olive oil, put some in a little jar or bottle and leave it on your bathroom counter. Apply dots of it all over your face, paying special attention to your cheeks and neck. Avoid the eye area with excess oil, but any you have left on your fingers that isn’t absorbed can be dotted under the eyes. If you are thinking, Don’t worry about your pores clogging. Olive oil is non-comedogenic, and the extra virgin variety is actually very light on the face.

The one thing that I didn’t mention is that no matter how natural you make your skin, you must-use a sunscreen. There are many on the market that are combined with other ingredients that can make your face red and irritated. Products containing PABA or padimate A and O can be a problem to people with dry and sensitive skin. Benzophenones, cinnamates, dibenzoylmethanes, and others are also irritating and can cause an allergic reaction known as contact dermatitis. Although sunscreens known as physical blocking agents can be good for people known to get allergic reactions, they can be very heavy and don’t absorb well into the skin. Products that are titanium dioxide- or micronized zinc oxide-based seem to be the best for people with sensitive skin. A good thing to know is most mineral foundations have these ingredients. If you already use a mineral foundation, you may not have to add an extra step for sun protection. Check your foundation’s ingredients to see the ingredients and how much sun-protection is in them. Another great natural sunscreen is by Burt’s Bees. It’s heavier than some, but don’t need a lot. I find it absorbs quicker than most. I have also found a foundation primer that contains an SPF which I use from time to time. (Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer SPF15 w/Dermaxyl Complex, $36)

Even if you had to purchase everything you would need to pamper your face this season all at once, you probably would still come out spending less than if you were to buy one high-end department store age-fighting moisturizer. Plus you’d still have enough ingredients to whip up about 10+ more batches (at least!). You can see how the savings would quickly add up.

If you aren’t sure if what I’m using would be good for your skin type, or if you’d like to add a couple of ingredients for other specific problems, take a look at these great websites. They give you a list of various ingredients and their benefits as well as some great recipe ideas. Cook yourself up an inexpensive homemade facial and take those savings to splurge on something fun (like a killer purse!)
