“Easy Come, Easy Go”–Fall Style

9 Nov

Easy come easy goTick Tock, Tick Tock…

Okay, let me sum this up as best as I can, as quick as I can:
It is 11:40 pm
1). I have insomnia
2). I’m beyond stressed
3). I’m watching repeats of Sex and the City

No big deal, right? Actually right now, it’s not. But when Carrie starts going mentally nuts because Big wants to leave his wife for her, it will get very tense. I understand… to most of you, that means nothing. But to those who understand, I’ll pause for a moment while you get a Swiss Roll and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

Even being somewhat back in the workforce hasn’t completely taken me out of the world of SATC. I still know every episode and the storyline and outcome of each. The one I’m watching right now? “Easy Come, Easy Go.” Oh, I could go through the plot but it’s really involved and you probably either already know or don’t care.

But I will spin the episode title a bit for the sake of this post: Easy come, easy go. I can apply that to this week, specifically. A few things came and went for this fashionista. And they all had their own personal relevance. So let’s incorporate this theme into Sassy’s agenda:

imageEasy Come–Converse Chuck Taylor All Star ‘Ox-Sparkle Wash’ Low Top Sneaker.
This purchase was easy peasy. Fall is here…walking in heels is dangerous, flats can get wet, too early for many boots. So what do you wear when the whether is sh*t but still want to have some style? An epic style of Chuck Taylor’s. This pair looks a little like stone washed denim but in black. Definitely jazzy, and if you pair them with a nice pair of straight legged dark wash jeans and a layered look hoodie top, you’ve got a nice ensemble for a casual day! A fabulous add to my new seasonal footwear. (Sassy’s Steal: $44.99 (sale), Norstrom.com)

imageEasy Go–Aveeno Ultra-Calming Makeup Removing Wipes.
Getting late? Too tired to go through the whole nightly face routine of washing, exfoliating, treating, moisturizing, etc.? Keep these by the bed for those lazy nights! I stand by the statement: never let the pillow be your washcloth. But you can just rid your day of the dirt, grime and makeup with this pre-moisten cloth that takes everything off your face, even mascara. Just an easy wipe-wipe-gone! Keep a sample size of your favorite night cream & eye cream just treat your face after you’ve said goodbye to all the goop. (Sassy’s Fave: Yes To Blueberries Age Refresh Cleansing Facial Towelettes, $6.59. CVS)

imageEasy Come–Roxy Hooded Sweater.
I know I probably already have a sh*t ton of sweaters packed away to get me into this season, but with me kind of expanding my writing as well as putting in time with the tattoo shop, I need some comfort and warmth too. I’m trying to bring out the lightest weight sweaters first, and TJ Maxx has a great array of Roxy tops at fabulous prices. Warm, fun hoodies, soft and comfortable makes these sweaters a staple in my closet now. I picked up a black and neutral one to get started! (Sassy’s Steal: $29.99, TJ Maxx stores)

imageEasy Go–Philosophy’s Homemade Honey Buns Shower Gel and Lotion.
I love checking out TJ Maxx’s skin care, make up, and body area when I go. I have a few products that I specifically look for because the price is so good if I find them. This venture didn’t get me what I usually look for but it did land me a set of sweet smelling, delicious body treats that are perfect for the changing seasons. The bath & shower gel smells just like warm honey breakfast rolls right out of the oven. A great way to wash the blues right down the drain. And it’s an “easy go” for dry skin with a non-greasy body moisturizer in the same tasty scent. A great way for those stresses to say buh-bye with a smell so soothing to the senses. (Sassy’s Steal: $7.99 each, TJ Maxx stores)

So you see how an episode of Sex and the City can be turned around to fit even into the simplest days? I turned “Easy Come, Easy Go” into an article about what needs to come into your glamour collection for this fall. But that’s just a general rambling about what I did tonight. Stay tuned because Fall is upon us and I will be trying and discovering more and more things soon, without a doubt!!

*POOF*–Quick Fall Lip Balm!

25 Oct

image
Okay no huge, long, wordy post. This is direct and to-the-point so follow along and don’t fall behind. I’m going to quickly tell you how to make a simple, moisturizing lip balm to keep you pucker happy as the seasons change. Ready?

You will need the following items:

* 1/2 tsp. raw honey STILL IN THE WAX comb (see photo)
* 1/2 tsp. organic cold pressed coconut oil
* 1/2 tsp. raw honey WAX ONLY. (You can get this by scooping out 1 teaspoon of honey from the comb, eat it, and continue to chew it till all that is left is the wax.) (see photo)
* Sprinkle of organic cinnamon

Honey
Coconut oil
Cinnamon

If you read my posts on a regular basis, you should have everything you need already because they are all items that are in my bathroom or kitchen right now. If you WANT to buy them, feel free… but don’t just use them for this balm. They are a few of nature’s precious commodities that can be used in soooo many beauty products as well as in cooking & baking.

Now, take a shot glass and scoop out the waxed honey–scrape it in. Scoop out the coconut out–scrape it in. Drop in the chewed piece of wax (flatten it out as best you can)–add that in. Add the dash of cinnamon. Put the shot glass in the microwave on MEDIUM for 15 seconds. Check it. See if anything is melting/bubbling. If yes, STOP! If not, put it in again for 10 seconds more. Now you should see the coconut oil has melted and the honey is bubbling. BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THE GLASS IS HOT AS HELL! Remove with a hotmit and set on counter. With a Popsicle stick, a narrow butter knife or tiny spoon, begin stirring.(Don’t touch the glass!!!) It should blend easily and begin firming up the more you stir. Make sure it is completely blended and lump free.

Before it gets too firm, scrape all contents into a CLEAN left over eye shadow container, tiny makeup jar or even an empty sample holder that has been thoroughly cleaned & dried. Put the balm in the container, scooping it in after if has cooled a bit. Smooth out the top and refrigerate for an hour.

My balm

Bam. Done. Awesome, easy balm! Once you get it mastered, you’ll be able to put them in swivel Chapstick-like tubes for easier application and storage. Sure, you could get funky with flavors, but for fall, stick with cinnamon. The balm works fab, lasts for hours & hours and well, hell….you made it. Au Naturale! All the ingredients are helpful for protecting you from the nasty germs flying around since all are anti-viral and anti-bacterial.

See? Easy peasy, puddin’ and pie. A nice, tasty, easy DIY lip balm for fall that you can be proud to make & call your own!!

My October Fab Finds…..

12 Nov

It is mid November and we are officially in to the full Fall effect. Temperatures are getting cooler, colors are getting warmer, and Old Man Winter is knocking on the door. Before you know it, there will be Christmas and holiday ads on TV and decorations in the stores. Oh wait… that’s already happening. Did I sleep through Halloween or just totally missed it?

October was a good month for me. The cooler weather allowed me to swap out my wardrobe with sweaters and shrugs for tanks and tees. Sandals got packed up and boots were freed from storage. It also meant I had to bump up the moisture in my skin—head to toe—and fight off the dry skin before it was able to sneak in and cause a wrinkle or two. I even picked up a couple of new lipsticks and eye shadows to give my makeup look a seasonal boost.

So what things did I discover in October that added a bit of flash into my Fall fashion and glamour routine? Check out my newest “can’t live without them” items that have made a home in my fashionista ensemble:

L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Concentrated Serum – I will say right now: I am a loyal fan of my skin care brand and have been faithful to their products for over a year. I have never had a regimen that really made such a noticeable difference in my skin’s look and texture. Plus the supplements really target what they say they will. BUT, with that being said, there are nights when I am so exhausted that I fall into bed totally forgetting to “take my face off”. It’s because of those times that I have disposable, no-rinse facial wipes to take off my makeup without leaving the comfort of my bed. But what about an age-fighting product I can keep bedside too? That’s where the Revitalift Serum comes into play. This is the first retail anti-aging product that, available at a more than reasonable price, that I have been able to use without any skin irritations or issues. Not to mention?… It works! It’s a do-everything product that can be used after a quick cleansing to keep my skin fresh, hydrated and radiant without having to leave my bed! And the fact that it is under $20 isn’t bad either! Definitely a great fill-in product when I’m too exhausted to do my entire nighttime routine.

No Miss Lip Gloss in “Ferndale Fawn” – I love No Miss cosmetics! They have high quality products, using natural resources to develop non-chemical, non-cancerous products without harming the environment. They do NO animal testing and use healthy ingredients, offering truly NATURAL products that everyone can afford. Their lip glosses feature coconut oil, grape seed oil, and vitamin E to keep your lips soft and moisturized all day with long lasting color. “Ferndale Fawn” is a great goldish nude color which looks great on a fall day either alone or topping your favorite deep lipstick. I love using it when I go with a bold eye look that pops! but want a more low-keyed pucker that still conditions my often dry lips. Although No Miss products are currently available online, keep an eye out for them in your favorite health food stores very soon! Find them at nomiss.com

L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Power Volume 24H Mascara – I know, I know, how many mascaras am I going to find that will make me say, “Oh THIS is the one.” I’ll be honest, I’m not sure if this is THE one, but I will say it is darn good! The formula is the longest-lasting mascara that I have ever used without smudging, smearing or flaking. It stays put. ALL DAY…ALL NIGHT! Plus the brush is large, full and lush, coating every lash to give you dramatic looking lashes. The closest mascara I have ever used that is similar to this cost me over $30. This one is on a retail/drugstore level for under $10. A great find and a better steal!!

Canyon River Blues Moxy Slippers – Okay, I know what you are thinking: “How can the fashionista shoe lover rave about a pair of slippers?” Because I’m a fashionista shoe lover and I know footwear. As Carrie once said in an episode of Sex and the City: “Men I may not know, but shoes?….Shoes I know!” When I have a day of writing planned at home in the comfort of my own home, I’ll be honest—you won’t find me wearing anything runway worthy. I might wear a nice top, maybe even a pair of designer jeans, but that would be dressing up. I like casual workout pants and funny graphic tees for the most part, but in the colder weather I definitely need something warm and fuzzy on my feet. The thing I like best about these slippers is that they have a really solid sole on them so if I need to go outside to get the mail, pick up a delivery or get something from my car, I don’t have to worry about my feet getting cold or wet, or slipping on the grass or ground. EVERYONE needs an “Oh heavens, I am NOT dressing up today” footwear that you can put on and just aaaaaah! in. For me?…these are them. These slippers are available at Sears for a retail price of $29.99…but watch the sales. I actually got TWO pair of these on a Buy One Get One FREE sale! WOOT for a BOGO!

Better Homes & Gardens Scented Wax Cubes in “Tropical Beach Holiday” – I know it might be a little early for Christmas scents, but BH&G gives you some great choices to ease you into the transition. I love their autumn scents, like Spiced Pumpkin Pie and Crisp Fall Leaves. Those rich warm spices just get you in the mood. But I found this “Tropical Beach Holiday” scent a nice surprise! It is like a fresh, ocean-like fragrance with strong background notes of rich pine and holiday cookies. It’s not an overpowering scent but actually throws off a light, calming, holiday smell that fills the room and your senses with the delicate essence of the approaching season. It helps motivate me for the day ahead by putting me in laid-back, holiday mood. Available at Walmart, $2.00 for six cubes.

There you go fashionistas…my fab finds in October. Remember it’s not always about the makeup you wear, the skincare you use, the styles you flash. It’s sometimes—cancel that—it’s ALWAYS about how you feel inside, the poise you wear in a smile. So embrace the things on you and around you to keep yourself feeling your absolute best. Make sure you keep your self-confidence rising even as the leaves and temperatures fall!

Scents & Sensability….

23 Oct

This week, my November issue of Glamour magazine came in the mail. I love the fall issues of my favorite glam rags. They feature such cozy clothes like warm sweaters and cardigans, killer boots, chic outerwear, accessories that you’d never consider, and great tips on hair and skin care for the changing seasons. This month, however, I noticed one thing more than others:  they had quite the extensive array of designer perfume samples inside. You know, the little “lift and sniff” flaps to test out what is new and what is hot in scents this season? As much as I’d love to rip them open all at once and wipe the strips on my wrists, I know you really need to just smell and try one at a time to get the full effect and see if it is something I like. After scratching, sniffing and wearing all the samples in this month’s issue, I think I found some nice scents that I would consider for myself. And I also found some that just were not for me…at all. Now, I’m telling you, not every scent is for everyone, and what smells like ick on me may smell enticing on you. Everyone is different. And that is why there are thousands of perfumes on the market—you need to find the one that speaks to you!

Here are my experiences with the samples that came in Glamour’s issue this month, and my thoughts and experiences with them:

“Viva La Juicy Le Fleur” by Juicy Couture

(from juicycouture.com) ‘Uplifting, playful, dreamy. Inspired by the blushing aura of being in love.”

I am a huge… I mean HUGE… Juicy fan. Their fragrance, “Viva La Juicy” (“VLJ”), might be my #1 go-to daytime fun designer scent. “Viva La Juicy Le Fleur” has notes similar to “VLJ” but also has notes of mandarin and wild berries, combined with warm florals like honeysuckle, gardenia and soft jasmine all wrapped in vanilla, caramel and sandalwood. I love “VLJ” because it has a strong, independent, fun yet feminine allure. “VLJ La Fleur” gives you all that with a softer, warmer, more romantic approach. I really like it. I mean REALLY like it! Where I might wear “VLJ” with jeans, a jazzy tee, and leather boots, I’d probably wear “VLJ LaFleur” with all that plus a set of peals and a ruffled cardi to give me a more feminine edge. The warmer notes are perfect for fall with a touch of sheer, modern romance, but is still a recognizable fragrance from Juicy without a doubt. Delish!

Sassy Scale of 1-10:  a big 10

“Beautiful” by Estée Lauder

(from Macys.com) “The fragrance of a thousand flowers. A tender bouquet of lilies and roses, marigold and orange blossoms…all warmed with a touch of citrus. Romantic, tender & memorable.”

Estée Lauder’s “Beautiful” has been a popular fragrance for quite some time. In fact, for many women it is their signature scent. Even though it is a high floral scent (with strong notes of roses), it can be worn all year round, by all ages, in all situations.  Personally?  I am not a huge fan. I am not a lover of heavy floral scents—especially roses—mainly because they just don’t wear well on me. How they smell in the bottle is not how they smell on my skin, that’s for sure! This is one of those scents that changes once it is on my skin, and not for the better. It is a simple, gorgeous, and recognizable scent without a doubt. But for me?…It just comes across too heavy and too mature for my liking.

Sassy’s Scale of 1-10:  2

“Dehlia Noir” by Givenchy

(from Macys.com): “A fantasy flower. The first fragrance developed under the creative direction of Riccardo Tisci. Dehlia Noir embodies the mysterious singular radiance of a woman’s graceful power.”

Givenchy Parfums have been around since 1947 and were inspired by their most famous client, Audrey Hepburn. Right there you know their scents are rich, sophisticate and distinguished. The newest version of “Dehlia Noir” that was launched this year is truly feminine with gentle pink shades, built around floral-fruity notes with woody accents with noticeable tinges of mandarin, lemon and peach zest. A warm cedar base makes this a truly romantic scent, perfect for cooler temps.

The scent is very unique to me. Although it, at first, comes across to my nose as extremely strong, it actually blends well and softens the longer it lingers on the skin. It is definitely exceptional, soft and feminine. Although I could not see me wearing this often, I could see me wearing this on a special occasion or romantic late night with my hubby, paired with the classic little black dress, high heels and bold red lips. Sexy!

Sassy Scale of 1-10: 6

“DOT” by Marc Jacobs

(from dotmarcjacobs.com ad) “Chic and charming with a touch of the unexpected. A lush floral bouquet of beautiful jasmine & juicy red berries.”

I was thrilled when I heard Marc Jacobs was introducing a new perfume this season. I am a big fan of “Daisy” and it is probably my most worn scent in the spring & summer. The packaging of “DOT” is adorable and catches the eye with a big bright red bottle that looks like a lady bug. How cute! Just like its perky bottle, the scent is energetic and alive. It makes you smile. It is simple, straightforward and upbeat. A total mood lifter. The top notes of red berries and bold hints of dragonfruit and honeysuckle give it its playful flirtiness. Add a touch of jasmine, coconut water, orange blossoms and creamy vanilla and it gives off a warm, rounded feminine scent with a colorful, unique statement.

Marc Jacobs’ “DOT” fragrance scores big with me. It is a bit more warm and fun than “Daisy” with its sassy, bright, sensual side which goes perfectly with the cooler temperatures. For me, it is a wear-with-anything…anytime…anywhere perfume and I can’t say that with many of the ones that I own!

Sassy’s Scale of 1-10: 9

“Pour Femme” by Dolce & Gabbana

(from dolcegabanna.com) “From the Mediterranean, epicenter of harmonies and contrasts, the classic fragrance is reborn embodying the essence of the Dolce & Gabbana woman—passionate, sensitive and maternal.”

Dolce & Gabbana is NO stranger to the fragrance world. Starting as an Italian luxury fashion house in 1982, they launched their first perfume “Dolce & Gabbana” in 1992. Their timeless and formal style expanded into current fads as well as a long-term trends in sunglasses, eyewear, purses and watches soon after.  In 2012, D & G “fine tuned” their original fragrance to give it a more modern edge. In addition to the original notes of neroli, tangerine, jasmine, orange blossom, sandalwood and heliotrope (huh?), D & G added hints of raspberry and marshmallow to bring it to a warm, contemporary level.

A while back, I had purchased D & G’s rollerball perfume “l’eau the one”. I liked the lily of the valley scent embraced by fruits. It is modern and light with oriental levels that embodies the fragrance. It is refreshing, , slightly seductive but a “go about your day” accessory perfume that is perfect for spring. It is a nice refined scent with charm and sophistication which makes a woman stand out amongst the rest. Because I liked “l’eau the one”, I thought I’d like D & G’s “Pour Femme” as well. It has many of the same notes as the rollerball that I own, but I’m sad to say…. it just did not work for me. It comes across a little too musky for me which I am not a fan of, and is a bit too rich and heavy for my liking. I don’t like a scent that makes me feel like it is weighing me down. Although autumn colognes tend to have heavier notes of warm scents, I just don’t like ones that come across as overpowering. Which is why this one doesn’t float my boat.

Sassy’s Scale of 1-10:  3

Finding a new scent for the new season can be an endeavor of trial and error. I seriously suggest you test a fragrance for several days if possible (see if your local beauty department can give you an extended sample) and don’t mix them each day. See how your body embraces the scent in various situations. Also, don’t just buy a scent you’ve sniffed in the bottle at the store. Spritz a card or get a sample to try outside in your own setting. With all open scents around, you may not be getting the true smell of how it lays on your skin in the store. And whenever possible, layer your scent. This time of year, it is great to use a moisturizing body wash and lotion of your favorite scent perfume before getting dressed and putting the final spritz on. This will not only condition your skin but extend its aromas. My favorite this year is “Cashmere Glow” from Bath & Body Works. The scents of warm peach and amber are blended into this warm, soothing fragrance, and it comes in a shower gel, body lotion, rich body cream, body butter, fragrance mist, shimmer mist, sparkle glow body lotion and more. You can layer it up and stay soft while smelling subtly sexy all day long!

Fall Things I DON’T Need…….

14 Oct

The time has come to start swapping out a few of my summer dresses, sleeveless tops, lightweight tees and sandals for some longer sleeves, warmer tops, funky shoes and chic sweaters. I love fall. I’d rather layer it on than sweat it off. Move the shorts and capris over for some darker pants and jeans. As I pack things away, label storage bins and starting bringing out the fall fashions and accessories, I’m realizing I’m pretty stocked. My ensemble from last year is still in good shape and pretty current with the fashion trends. In fact, some things I have in abundance. Almost to the point of too many. As I check out the things I have for the change in seasons, I’m not quite sure what I do need but it is pretty obvious what I don’t!

These items that are overflowing my closet and drawers I have decided to put down in print, so I can share them and look back once in a while to remind myself, “Sassy, good heavens, do NOT buy another one of those.” I hope that works. Sometimes a good deal makes it difficult to say no. Here are a few of my “you don’t need anymore of these” items this season:

1) Boots — Holy smokes, I went boot crazy last year! When the new season came this year, I quickly picked up a pair of dressy beige boots which were the only ones I thought were a true necessity. I wanted to get them early before the good styles sold out. Then I decided to also get myself a pair of killer black leather riding boots that would go with everything. Now I am set. I have all colors needed for my ensemble, all fashionable styles, and all heel heights are represented as well. It is time to step away from the boots….. step away, step away. Sassy grabbed: Guess Black Riding Boots, $79.99, TJMaxx

2) Eye Shadows — I decided to reorganize my makeup drawer recently, sorting out all of my glamour items that I have collected over the years. Even after throwing out old items that probably weren’t “healthy” anymore, I realized the amount of eye shadows I still have is flat out embarrassing. Granted, I probably didn’t buy many of them (I sample a lot for various companies) but still… I have them. I have them divided up between creams and mineral shadows, then sorted by highlighters, lid colors and accent shades. In addition to all of those, I probably still have 15 color pallets from different brands with all combinations imaginable. It’s shameful. Even if I didn’t have a color I wanted (which I can’t see happening), I probably could create it with a multitude of my mineral shades. Just a little mixing of this and that and whala!!… A color is born. It’s time to stay away from ALL shadows. No more. However, if you’d like me to test or try a sample or brand…. send it over! I’ll never turn down a sample! The only thing I realized that I did need was a good shadow base to help even out my lids and hold all these colors I have… so THAT I got! Sassy grabbed: LA Minerals Eye Fix in Fair, $12.99, laminerals.com

3) Jeans — It’s obvious I love my denims. Up until about 15 years ago, I never wore nice jeans. They never fit well. Now, between changing styles and adding a few pounds in the right places, I love-love-love my jeans. Boot cut, skinnies, jeggings… doesn’t matter. I’ve got them all. I may find a pair or two at the store that is a brand that yells “Deal! Deal!” and I have to buy them. They speak to me! But for the most part, with the new season upon us, I’m good on denims. Now granted… if any nice colored jeans come out for fall, or patterned jeggings (animal print! cough..cough..), I may have to reconsider a small purchase. Which I already did. Sassy grabbed: Princess Vera Wang Feather Printed Skinny Stretch Jeans, $28.99, Kohl’s

4) Anything on summer clearance — Holy smokes, put a red markdown tag on something fashionable and I am drawn to it like steel to a magnet. Sure, a $5 cami or a $7 graphic tee is definitely a scream of a deal, but the fact remains I have MORE than enough to wear something different every day for three months and still have a few left over without doubling up. And NO I can’t say that I can just jazz it up with a cute cardi for winter because I have enough of those too! I’m such a sucker for a red tag. For all that is good for my well being (and the well being of my checking account), I have to steer clear of the clearance department. Period. (But before I did…) Sassy grabbed: Apt. 9 Gold Sequined Tank Top, $20.00, Kohls

Now that I know what I DON’T need, it’s obvious with changing styles and hot colors that there will be a couple of things that I will need to add to keep my look current. Not much and not a lot cost wise, just enough to keep things fresh and edgy. It really doesn’t take an entire credit card and a van to turn last year’s blahs into this year’s wows. So I will stay away from the big items I don’t need and just keep my eyes open for a few little accessories and add-ons to give last year’s fashions a splash of pop for today!!

Essentials For Fall…..

13 Sep

My daughter is very much like her mother. In addition to her love of fashion, glamour, accessories and all the goodies associated with those, she also loves to read. That is where things get a little different. She has a four-shelf bookcase completely full of books that she has read from cover to cover. I, too, love to read, but my interest is in magazines. I have a shorter attention span than my daughter, bless her soul, and I prefer pictures over words. Hey, I admit it. That would explain why I have subscriptions to Glamour, Marie Claire, and Lucky, just to name a few. And my husband’s Game of Thrones book collection sits on my side of the bed, covered in dust.

Recently, my daughter received her latest issue of Seventeen in the mail. I am actually a big fan of this magazine and I even at my age (cough cough 29+ cough cough), I like reading it very much. The he said/she said high school stuff is something that doesn’t jazz me whatsoever (SO been there, done that) but I do like seeing what girls my daughter’s age ARE wearing and SHOULD be wearing. It also gives ME good seasonal tips for things that are hot right now, things like colors, styles and especially accessories! October’s issue was really good because it focused on fall and some “key pieces” that every fashionista should have in her wardrobe to look chic and stylish this season. I think that the article was done fabulously because not only did it focus on specific items for that age group, but it also gave generalized “categories” that any age could work from. Plus—and this is a big plus—it was based on a reader vote. REAL people like you and me said these were items THEY have and can’t live without. I liked that. I’m an average Jane (not counting my shoe quantity), and like suggestions from people like me.

So what were a few of the “must have” fall items that I think anyone—at any age—should have, thanks to Seventeen’s reader’s suggestions? Here’s a few of what they think are necessities. A few of the items I have already picked up for myself. Hey, what can I say…I like to be ready!:

Lightweight Pullover – Tanks and camis are too cold, short sleeves may not be warm enough and sweaters are too hot. You need something that is stylish and right in the middle. And a nice lightweight top is just the thing. They don’t have to be always be a boring, solid color either. Don’t be afraid to look at stripes, prints, and color blocking. And if you do go solid, feel free to jazz it up with some bulky chains or a colorful scarf!
Sassy Picked: bebe’s Crochet Bell Sleeve Cowl Top. bebe stores & bebe.com (reg. $64, on sale for $18)

Wedges – I know wedges are big. REALLY big. No… literally REALLY big, to the point where I would plaster my face on any sidewalk if I tried walking in some of the ones I have seen. I guess that’s where the younger generation has an edge on me. I do love my wedges, and I have many more wedge sandals than I do wedge shoes for fall. They are, however, a must have. Find a pair or two or six that you are comfortable in and that goes with most of your outfits. And in the mix, throw in one funky pair just for fun.
Sassy Picked: Coconut’s “Oliver” Grey Suede Wedges. Marshalls. (reg. $50, clearance for $29)

Chain-Strap Purse – Oh Chanel, we bow to you as an idol, a leader and an inspirational icon in the industry. Your line always has pieces that are immediately recognizable and eternally fashionable. They are stylish and forever classy. A 1960’s Chanel suit could be worn with style and elegance even today and heads would turn every where you went. Because they would just know. The epic Chanel quilted purse with a chain strap started a trend that still goes strong even today. Of course, some of the purses can now be more edgy, rocker-ish and flamboyant, but the chain-strap purse can go with absolutely anything and everything! A must have in any girl’s ensemble at any time of year.
Sassy Picked: Silver Quilted Purse with Chain Strap. Super Shoes. (on sale, $16)

Statement Necklace – There are days when jeans and a t-shirt could make you feel overdressed. You just aren’t in diva mode, and if your inner-fashionista would let you leave the house in Mickey Mouse fleece pajama bottoms with a matching cami, you would. But you know you can’t, so you stretch your glamourism as far as it will go, and you grab a pair of good fitting jeans and a comfy fitting tee. Still blah? Doesn’t have to be. Throw on a SLAMMIN’ necklace with an immeasurable “WOW” factor and no one will even notice you’re wearing the same jeans you wore two days ago (without washing!) Accessories are everything this fall and a banging necklace will draw the eye right to it, making the statement that you are still the glam girl that you know you are!
Sassy Picked: Carolee Plated Bezel Pendant Necklace. Bloomingdales. (reg. $48, paid $37 after discount codes and free shipping)

Skinny Jeans – I think after shoes and purses, this will be my other major fashion addiction. I love jeans. I love ALL jeans. But skinny jeans? Oh lordy. I shake my head. You gotta have a pair. Or two. Or three. Or like me… eleven. Give or take. Shhhh. No one needs to know. Skinny jeans are SO versatile. On a cool day, cuff them up boyfriend style and throw on a pair of spiffy flats. On a cold day, wear them with your favorite boots of any kind, tucked in and looking sharp. On date night, jazz them up with wedges, dressy boots, or some type of heel. My personal rule is the dressier the outfit, the darker the jeans. I have some that are a lighter worn blue with minor rips that I’ll wear with an eclectic tee. I own a few that are medium blue that go great with a pretty cami and a nice lightweight cardigan. I also have several dark blue skinnies that I love to rock out with, wearing a studded bright tee and a leather jacket, or dress up in with a lacy belted tunic. The possibilities are endless which makes them a MUST HAVE in your fall collection.

The Ten Day “You” Challenge – Day 9

19 Nov

I never said that my Ten Day “You” Challenge would be done in exactly 10 days., now did I? Okay, so I’m a tad inconsistent (and noticeably lazy) lately. Work with me people….

Where were we? Oh, yeah, so today is Day 9–Nine Loves. This will certainly be easier than the ten secrets. I could put my husband down nine times but I’m sure that’s would not be very soul-searching of me. So, let’s dig a little deeper….

Nine Loves

    1. My fabulous husband

    2. My two great kids

    3. My kittie cats (all five–yes I said five–of them)

    4. Pistachio ice cream

    5. Fall

    6. Jeans (All brands, all styles, all prices!)

    7. Writing about makeup and fashion

    8. Designer handbags

    9. A fabulous steak dinner, complete with baked potato & sour cream

I probably could change the list each week — adding things some days, taking things off on others. The above nine, however, will always stay the same. Of course there is one thing I didn’t put down but I don’t think I should have to. In fact, it should be so much of a given that is should be everyone’s number one. And what is that great love?

Yourself.

That doesn’t mean you have to be a narcissist or egotistical. It just means you have to love who you are, what you are, where you’re at, and where you’re going. Getting to that point doesn’t happen in days, months or even years. In fact, many aren’t at that point yet at all. And that’s okay. For some it’s a work in progress, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Because the key word there to remember is this: progress.

I challenge all of you to enjoy your loves…. if possible, every day of your life!!

Letter From “The Editor” – Color My World

23 Nov

As I flipped through the fashion magazines that have been sent to me so far this month, one of my magazines really caught my interest. It wasn’t its beautiful fashions, make up looks, hair styles or flashy ads that made me take notice. It was its editor’s letter. Although I know that all magazines have a Letter from the Editor, it made me think about me and my own blog. I realize that each of my blog entries is written from the heart to all of my readers, kind of like a personal letter to each of you. I thought though that it might be nice to do my own version of a magazine’s Editor’s Letter and maybe start a new monthly trend. So here we go…

As I look at the load of laundry on my bedroom floor, I am mentally categorizing which basket I will have to put each piece of clothing in when I bring it to the basement to wash. I see jeans, a black sweater, a black pair of pants, a white t-shirt, a black sweater, a grey cami, a black cami, another black sweater, ANOTHER black sweater, a grey sweater, a grey cardigan, black socks, white socks, a black cardigan, a black pullover. Oh, and a purple tunic. ONE colorful item. You sensing a trend here?  Approximately 20 pieces of clothing, and only one of them had a color that did not appear on a TV show till after 1956. How come I didn’t notice until now that I was about as colorful as a character from one of the first episodes of “The Dick Van Dyke Show”?

When I go clothes shopping with my daughter, she always yells at me saying I seem to leave with tons of colorful bags, but they all seemed to be filled with items from the same color line: black and white. *Sigh* She is right. I must confess… I am afraid of color. I think that is because I have a powerfully pale skin tone and raging auburn red hair, and I feel that wearing color might draw attention to a potentially huge multi-hued faux pas. A horrific clashing of my coloring with my fashion shades. So I stick with blacks, whites, and shades that fall in between. The ultimate in safe. Only last year did I add two new colors to my wardrobe—purple and brown. Not really vibrant, huh? Sure, I have maybe an item or two of some other colors–lime green, gold, turquoise. But there they sit, tucked away in the back of the closet, sad and virtually unworn. Yawn.

Although standing out is something I never wanted to do in high school, I actually embrace it now that I’m older. The problem is I like to stand out with new styles, not new colors. I have a jazzy new pair of platform boots. In black. I just received a stylish ruffled cardigan. In white. And I have an awesome fleece zebra-print belted jacket. Yup, of course, in white and black. I need to change my mindset. Fast. I need to put myself out there. Now that I think about it, I ask myself why haven’t I taken notice of this sooner? I have to say that wearing bright colors in fashion brings about a newer sense of confidence when I wear them. They are a mood lifter, a smile maker. They make me walk taller and encourage me to make eye contact with people that I hope will walk away and wonder, “Hmmm. Who is she?” Why wouldn’t I want that feeling more often???

Tomorrow I am heading out to the mall to take my cousin, who is visiting from Italy, shopping at some of the popular stores here in America. Being so close to the holidays, I most likely won’t be buying a lot of things. But I will make a promise to myself to get one thing—a sweater, a top, a jacket—that stands out and makes me feel good about me. Something bright and totally out of my element! I challenge you to do the same. Step outside of your fashion comfort zone. Go ahead be bold… I dare you!!!

Five Things I Am Loving This Fall…

11 Oct

Everything that is associated with fall is enjoyable for me. Pumpkin carving, picking apples, making pies, the bright red and orange leaves, Halloween parties, allergies. Okay, so not everything is enjoyable. But I think the thing I love the most is that coolness in the air that tells me that a new season of fashion trends in here. So what are a few of the things that I will be enjoying this autumn? Take a peek…

1) New Boots – Anyone who follows fashion knows that boots aren’t just for bad weather anymore. In fact, as I look at some of the styles that are popular right now, I am convinced that wearing them on ice and/or snow could be detrimental to your health. Because being sure on my feet is very important to me, my hot boot this season is not too high, slightly chunky, and has a non-slip sole. Plus it’s killer chic with all the hot fashions this season. Kenneth Cole Reaction’s Lead Actress, $129, shoes.com

2) A New Scent – In the fall, I tend to lean towards fragrances that are a little “deeper” when the temperatures get cooler and my new fave is no exception. With top notes including blackberry and plum, mid-notes of burgundy rose and peony, and base notes of dark vanilla bean, balsam, and musks, this new aroma is daring and sensual without losing an ounce of femininity. Plus, it comes in many different forms including a body butter and shimmering body mist. Bath and Body Works’ Dark Kiss, from $5, Bath and Body Works retail stores.

3) Denim Leggings – It took me a little while to fall in love with the skinny jean, but the denim legging was an instant attraction. The fashion possibilities are endless when paired with tops ranging from a slim tank and boyfriend jacket to a long, tunic sweater. Plus they are the perfect love connection when matched with any jazzy style of boot!! Mudd’s Broomstick Skinny Jegging, $22, Kohl’s retail stores and kohls.com

4) A Trendy Hat – With accessorizing in the spotlight nowadays, nothing screams chic more than an in-style hat. Plus, in my wardrobe it serves two purposes: not only does it add a bit of pop to an already contemporary outfit, but it is also a great way to hide some unruly hair on a bad weather day! mark’s Put a Lid on It Hat, $16, local Avon representatives or avon.com

5) A Yummy Lip Gloss – Cooler temps mean drier skin… especially lips! Trying to keep my lips moist and colorful at the same time has always been a challenge for me. This year, I found a lip product full of glossy color with a moisturizing shine. And my favorite flavor is a tasty, neutral shade that provides a nude sparkle when worn alone or a pearl shimmer when worn over a favorite lipstick color. Bonnebell’s LipLITES Vanilla Swirl, from $4, drugstores or retail establishments

Take some time and have fun creating your own seasonal ensemble, fashionistas! I’m off to create some jazzy looks of my own.

But first?… I have a nice cup of hot cider with cinnamon schnapps calling my name. Fall yumminess at its BEST!!

Oh-So October…

24 Oct

Reasons Why I Love October:

1.   Digging out the extra blanket on that first chilly night.

2.   Goodbye bright summer fashion shades, hello rich warm hues.

3.   The smell of pumpkin and spice fragranced oils and candles.

4.   Being able to crack a window for a little cool, fresh air.

5.   Warm fresh apple pie.

6.   Watching the leaves turn bright colors that even Crayola couldn’t invent.

7.   No more oily skin from hot, humid days.

8.   Less lawn mowing.

9.   Long sweaters that cover a multitude of sins (and cookies).

10. Baseball playoffs!

11. The warm fuzzy robe and matching slippers.

12. Sorting through your kids’ bag of Halloween candy “for safety reasons”. (I’ve managed to convince my children that Charlston Chews, Baby Ruths, and Kit Kats are the root of all evil.)

Reasons Why I Hate October:

  1. Getting out of the shower on a freezing cold morning..

  2. Digging your warmer clothes out of the storage bins that are in the deep depths of your closet, that got covered in endless flip flops and sunny tote bags.

  3. Your rose bushes are no longer green.

  4. Chapped lips.

  5. Endless comfort foods that seem to go straight to your hips.

  6. Trick or treaters that don’t say “thank you”.

  7. Christmas decorations in the department stores BEFORE Halloween.

  8. Raking leaves non-stop.

  9. The hibernation of young, buff, shirtless landscapers. Sigh.

10. Baseball playoffs when your team doesn’t make it.

11. The beginning of cold and flu season, and little kids that feel the need to cough on you in the supermarket.

12. Candy corn (my husband said that).
